| 9 wk old Yorkiepoo I have a 9wk old Yorkiepoo female who I'm having a hard time training on a pee pad. The lady I bought her off of says she would put her in a play pen and the puppy would pee on the pads there. I dont have a play pen so I put the pee pad close to her bed. Ive only had her for about 4 days and I dont know how long It'll be before she will start going pee/poo outside. She has been peeing and pooing everywhere!! Ive been taking her outside everyday and she loves the grass but I still havent seen her do her "business". It just makes things alot more difficult when I have a very demanding 2 yr old at home as well!! But I know paitence is key when it comes to puppies. Also I have two more questions..My pup hates her collar, she cries everytime I put it on her. Is this normal at this age??Should I look into buying a new one? Are yorkiepoos very agressive? My little pup is pretty hyper and agressive...Please HELP!! I need your suggestions!! Thanks!!! Marlene |

| Welcome to YT!! Congrats on your new baby. How exciting!!! Ok, down to business. Your baby must be confined for now. I personally like the ex-pen, but you could also use a crate. She's probably peeing and pooping anywhere but her bed. You can set up a pen and have her bed, food, and toys at one end, and her piddle pad at the other. You don't necessarily have to have a dog pen, a playpen for children works just the same. Or, you could crate her. Place her in a crate and every hour take her out and give her a chance to potty, 15-20 mins. If she potties, give her a little chance to play. If she doesn't potty, put her back in for 10 mins and try again. Regardless of the method, never give her free roam unless you can keep your eye on her 100%. Learn her potty signals and if you see them, pick her up and take her to the pad. A routine is also great. She will eventually know what time is potty time. It's a bit of a process but you'll feel good that you both accomplished something together.

| I most definitely agree with the post above. Learn to know your puppy's sings for peeing and pooping. My little one usually wants to escape my arms when im holding him. That's a sign he either needs to pee or poop. As soon as I see him do either, I quickly pick him up and put him on the training pads. Its been 1month since we've had him, and he actually walks to his training pad to poop. YAYYYYYYYYYY! We are still working on the pee part. May I also add that I watch him 95% of the time. Yikes! My hubby and I take turns of course, but it's the only way we can both manage to maintain a constan flow of where he does his business. For a short while, he was pooping and peeing EVERYWHERE. 1 month later.... Im super tired and have had no more than 2hrs of sleep at a time. But I would not change it one bit. I just want to create the best environment for our little guy. You need to start early with the little ones for they do take a longer time to poty train, from my understanding. I hope it goes well with your little one. It will get better. Just don't give up.

| Welcome to YT. I noticed in your thread that you asked about a collar bothering her. I just wanted to let you know to never use a collar to walk her. That could cause a collasped trachea. You should only use a harness when taking her for walks. Good luck with the potty training!

One last thing. Enzyme cleaner, you can't live without it. I use Natures Miracle and I clean up any accidents with this and it really helps. Other cleaners will clean what you smell but not what they smell. I know I sound like a commercial, but it really helps. If your home smells like a big toilet to your little one, they're more prone to going inside. If only one spot (the piddle pads) smell like pee and poop, then that's where they will go.

| The second week I had my pup, I purchased a baby play pen off of craigs list for $20. It worked out great having the pads on one end (especially over night, I didn't have to get up and take him out over and over). I'm sure and X-pen would provide the same--anything they can walk around in and keep their sleep area clean, but "use it" on the other end--you just have to change the pads. During the 6 weeks of keeping him in the pen, we had around 10 accidents on our carpet when he was out for play time. Now that he's over 16 weeks and able to "hold it" over night and for longer periods during the day, I no longer use the play pen or pads. He goes outside and sleep in his wire crate. You may also want to try taking a piece of the Pad outside with you and placing it on the ground, that may help her to go when she's out there, since she is used to the pad and not grass. | If she's not used to going outside; you will have to stay outside with her until she does her business. Then PRAISE HER like crazy! Have a party with some really, really good treats that she only gets when she potty's outside. She'll get the message. But she is very young and you will have to be consistent with taking her out all the time, staying with her until she pees/poops; and then praise/treat. At her age, you can expect some accidents for a few more months but you need to get the idea in her head. I wouldn't use a collar to take her out; I would use a harness. Good Luck!

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Yeah I think you should deffo get a pen for her. I have Poppy in her pen with her bed and toys at one end and her pad at the other. At least then you can leave the room and you know exactly where she is and that shes safe. It also means you know where the pee's and poo's are incase she misses the pad so your not finding presents all over the house! As another member mentioned, you should never put a lead on her collar when you walk her as this can cause a collapsed trachea. Its ok to let her wear her collar so she has her ID tag on but when walking her attach her lead to a harness. And yes an enzyme cleaner comes in VERY helpful Congratulations on your new pup, remember if you see her doing the potty dance STRAIGHT on the pad and praise her lots and lots when she goes potty in the right place. Never tell her off if you find a present in the house because she wont know what she is getting wrong for, ONLY tell her off when you catch her in the act then put her straight on the pad Good luck.

| I know your pain!! I have a 7month female yorkie poo and she just started letting me know when she has to go potty outside by laying her paws on my leg and not moving(she usually moves non stop). But if she doesn't I usually know the signs because she'll start running in a circle or trying to squat. But prior to this I would take her out to potty every other hour. Once in the morning when I leave for work and feed her. Then every other hour when I get home from work. And from my experience, yes they are "busy bodies". I can never get her to sit still especially when company comes over. I literally have to put her back in her kennel because she won't stop scratching and jumping on whomever comes over. But the problem is when I do put her back in the kennel she won't stop barking until the company leaves.Uggh!! so annoying!!! |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Ok, I also got a nine weeks old yorkie&his name is tootsie "toots". I don't have a pen for him but I made a little area cover with some boards. When I first got him, he would pee everywhere on my kitchen floor every time I let him out. I would out his head bear his pee and said no. I showed him who's the alpha male so he'll know who's the boss plus he'll know he can't pee on the floor except his pee pad. It been a whole week and he been "alright" because I watched him constantly when I let him out after work. I know his sign of poop and pee which is a good thing! If you let her out every where, just be prepare to clean because basically, you're inviting your carpet as the pee pad for them. It will stay smell on carpet unless you do some professional cleaning. Well, they're only 9 wks so you&me will gave to be patience and keep training them! One advice from me, show him who's the boss/alpha male because that will make her scared of you and actually listen to you. Good luck to you&me! |

I am also concerned about how you described what you made for her in lieu of a pen. You said you made a "little area cover with some boards." This does not sound like a safe set up. How about getting an exercise pen or play yard? Yorkies (especially yorkie puppies) are very fragile. Boards falling in on them could well injure them seriously. They also love to chew and wood can splinter and cause problems. You want a nice safe environment for your pup.

Good post Debra! I think the rest of the posts have given you some good advice. I would like to add that everyone was being very nice about the age of your pup - it's REALLY young. Toy breeds should be with their Mom & littermates until 12 weeks - if not longer - so please be very patient with him. It's like expecting an infant to do toddler tasks. To be honest, my kids weren't completely potty trained until almost a year old - so don't be surprised if it takes a while - Yorkies are known for this. You definitely took on a pup during a busy time as a Mom. Having a 2 yr old toddler and a puppy is going to keep you busy - that's for sure. Please keep a good eye on your pup as toddler's have no clue to the consequences of their actions and grabbing a small dog can snap it's neck very easily. Many breeders won't sell their pups to people with toddlers because they're so easily hurt. Another thing - try to keep your pup on a feeding schedule - whether you feed several times a day or six - it will help you track when he's going to want to potty. Never withhold food or water - just keep track of it. Well, that's all I can think of right now. Congratulations on your new pup - please post pictures when you can and Welcome to YT!!!

| For any pup that age you'll have to pen her somehow Whether that means a playpen or keeping her corraled in one room at a time with you And as other people have stated you have to find out what your pups schedule is Meaning how soon after she eats will she poop and pee Usually for a new little pup its like 15 mins And you start by papering the entire play area with poop pads or paper and once they get the hang of it you take mode and more away
