| Help with name training ~ Isabella is almost 11 weeks. She has been such a joy sense she has came at 8 weeks. She is "potty pad trained" and has only had 1 accident off the pad due to me forgetting to put a pad down and one time with a poopy right next to the bad, not bad for being here almost three weeks. We keep her potty pad in a kitty litter box now and she is using this with no problems. After a couple days of training she sits on command and we are now working on "lay". She does it but not consistently yet. She is loving and we already cant imagine how we lived without her lol. Now.....lol I know we have been soooooo lucky lol. Ive not had a puppy in several years. She seems to be grasping things so quickly except her name lol. We are doing all the basics sitting at opposite ends and calling her etc. Nothing is working lol. I know she isnt deaf. I know she is very young still, do we just need more time?............I just cant remember when they start recognizing there names and responding........

| Congratulations for your success training your puppy. The two of you are working very well together. Isabella is a beautiful name, but the number of syllables may be the problem with your pup learning her name. I have read that dog names ideally should be 2 syllables and they should not sound like command words. There are also some letter combinations that appeal more to a dog's ear. Say the name whenever you greet your pup or touch your pup. Tickle her chest and say something like, "Isabella, my puppy, my sweetie pie, Isabella..." and so on. | Thanks for your help! You are right on the money! Now that Im thinking about it she does do better with "bella". Well then, we are going to try this and see how she does. It could be that she is so quick to learn other things Im expecting to much from our little darling lol. Thanks again! Quote:

I did that with my older boy. He started as Max and later became 'Max-eh-mo.' However, he clearly favors Maxman. | |

| I did used a clicker and treats the help my pup learn his name. Having the treat in my hand and moving it toward my face ,then clicking when he makes eye contact and then giving him the treat. After a few times I began saying his name when he made the eye contact before clicking. I did that game twice on two seperate days a few weeks ago. For the last 2 weeks I've noticed he immediately looks right at me or comes when he hears his name (he's 16 wks now). |

| A friend of mine uses a game she calls "stuff the puppy" to teach a dog its name... at feeding time, instead of normal food, get some really great treats (chopped cooked chicken, chicken livers, meatballs, cheese, etc.), and hand feed the dog, saying its name every time it gets a bite: "Bella!" (bite), "Bella," (bite), "Bella," (bite), etc. ad infinitum. The other thing I have to watch is to USE the dog's name every time I talk to him, instead of other phrases such as "little boy," "sweet boy," "little bit," "stinker," etc. Those sort of pet names work fine later, after he knows his name, but they only confuse him when he's just learning. |

| I was told a dog's name should be two syllables, to separate it from most commands that are one syllable (somehow this made sense to me). I was also told by Ruger's trainer to not use his name when he is bad, only when he is good. The name should have a positive association with it. But, it's hard not to yell his name when he is a bad doggy. BTW, my girlfriend and I were trying to come up with names. Since I'm a firearms instructor we tried the name Ruger and he immediately turned and looked at us when we called it. Other names didn't have the same effect. I also thought it was fun giving him a name that only a much larger dog would have. Last edited by ziggy925; 07-18-2010 at 06:37 PM. |
