How long can they 'hold' it I have a 7 month old female, very timid. We got her at 5 and a half months of age. She gets the 'go pee' outside no problem at all. She even stares at me while going as if to say 'see how smart I am'. Its cute. Anyways, I have been putting her out between 1030 and 11 at night, then I wake up at 3 or 4 and taker her out then. She seems to be fine. She has gone a long period without peeing in her crate, but just this last week, she has started going in her crate at night. She doesn't wimper or indicate in any way that she needs to go. Just curious as to how long your dogs can go without peeing. I know the age rule, so she should be able to go the night.....don't know why she can't or won't. She came from a breeder and lived in a cage with pee pads at one end. Her crate that I put her in at night is very small, but she still has a bit of room to move. Maybe I should cut that off to stand up/turn around size again. I know to be patient, but it is a bit frustrating when you make so much headway, then poof, it seems to disappear. I guess I just need to be encouraged right about now.....

Your girl should be able to go from 10-11 pm to 3-4 am without a potty break. My boys, both over a year old, can go up to 7-8 hours overnight (I strongly advise against this during daytime/waking hours). They are pad-trained, so I know this is their choice. Any possibility that your girl has a urinary tract infection? Any diet or other behavior changes? How is she doing with her potty habits during waking hours? (ETA: I re-read your post and see she does well during the day -- no accidents?). Last edited by Maximo; 06-25-2010 at 07:04 AM.

She is fine during the day and I go max 4 and a half hours if I get tied up at work. When I come home, its business first then play. I give her as much exercise as possible. I am rethinking it and I am wondering if she got sick. Early in the evening, she got sick and threw up yellowish liquid....and because i saw yellow on her blankie, I assumed it was pee......(I didn't sniff to find out). I try not to let her go any longer than 6 hours, but she has been up to 9 (by accident) and she never had a accident. When I left for work this morning she was not herself, cowering and shaking and just curled up in a ball. Noon, she seems herself now...she is always into stuff outside and I do my best to patrol, but boy...they are fast when they want to be. I shall leave it a day or so and see if she goes again in her kennel after 6 or 7 hours. Usually I can't make it that long without waking up anyways. Will see what happens...

I know what you mean trying to watch what they put in their mouths. It does get a little easier with age. Yellowish, foamy liquid is usually bile that comes up when the stomach is empty and hungry. My younger boy needed small quantities of food at shorter intervals than my bigger boy, otherwise he would spit up yellow bile.

Well, she went from about 1030 last night til 530 this morning. Itook her out about 330 and she just sat and looked at me. At least I have an idea on what is good for her. thanks for the info about spit up....she does have loud grumblings in her tummy from time to time, but I can't force feed her. She eats when she is ready....terrier...stubborn!

If your girl eats kibble, try teaching her some tricks (basic commands of sit, stay, shake, and so on) and use kibble as the reward. Do a trick or two right before bedtime and whenever you wake up with your pup. This is a great way to get a least a couple or few kibble in her belly. A couple kibble here and there is all it took to keep my little guy's tummy settled so that he wouldn't spit up bile. | |
