| housebreaking I'm in the process of housebreaking my 11 week old puppy. When is a good time to start taking him outside to potty? Right now, he uses the pee pads sometimes, and sometimes we take him outside. And, of course, he still has accidents on the floor. He's really good at holding it when he's in his crate, but he will let us know when he has to go (when he's in the crate, other times he will just surprise us). And if we can't get him outside in time, he uses the pee pad right beside the door. Well, he will pee there, but he won't poop. He refuses to poop where he pees. He tends to poop in random places around the house This is my first time ever housebreaking a dog and I just want to make sure I'm doing it correctly. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. | yes common I am not an expert but I have heard they don't like to poop where they poo. My pup tends to poo out of site so I have pads in those places she has used. I think they feel too vulnerable when pooing so they go someplace out of sight. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | It's not unusal for dogs to want to poop and pee in different places. Animals in the wild do this all the time. We keep a poop pad in a seperate location. If you want to train for outside, you could crate overnight, and take him out first thing in the morning, and I mean carry him outside. If you plan to train to go outside, you will need to take him outside every couple of hours, and it's actually much easier to pee pad train. This thread has some great tips on housebreaking. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...ebreaking.html. This site helps you decide if indoor training or outdoor training is best for you.
