| Possibly a unique potty problem?!? We have a 6 year old named Sprinkle that we rescued about 2 months ago. She is a puppy mill survivor, and she is doing great. Opens up more and more every day! The only issue we have now is potty training... except its kind of the OPPOSITE of what I read on here. When we leave her home during the day, she NEVER goes inside. After trying a number of things, we've found "free-to-roam" to work best for her, as she would have MASSIVE anxiety if left in a crate or quarantined to a room. She sleeps a lot of the day when we're not home, or plays with the cats (we've video taped her to make sure she was ok). So, whether it's an hour or 7 hours, she does not go when we're not home. BUT, when we are home, she keeps going inside!!! She never poops inside, but it's very frustrating. Sometimes, we'll take her out and about an hour later she'll go on the carpet. She doesn't give us any signs of needing to go out, and if she can hold it while we're not home, we're at a loss as to why she can't hold it when we ARE home!!! So, here are the particulars. She gets fed once a day (at the advice of the rescue group). She gets meals at the same time every day, poops around the same time every day, and is on a pretty consistent routine (as much as possible). She has enough water, but we don't keep endless amounts out all the time. We take her out 4-5 times per day, at least. Any thoughts out there?!? Thanks!!!

Thor's Human Donating Member | Hm... is it possibly submissive/excitable urination? It's much easier for dogs to hold it when they are not moving around (just like for people). If she tends to pee when you approach her, it may be a submission signal. I wonder also if she doesn't want to leave you for long enough to go to the bathroom. That's a big reason I decided to go with potty pads for Thor. He had this terrible habit of peeing while playing -- he'd be running around, and stop for .00000001 seconds for a little squirt, and then keep going. I didn't think I'd be able to teach him to stop playing long enough to get taken outside, but now he can just run over to his potty pad without bringing the fun to a halt.

| Just a brief update... Sprinkle has been accident free for about 4 days now!! WOOHOO! Of course, we don't consider the problem completely solved, but there are improvements. She still does not go when we are not home. We do not crate her, as stated above, and she basically just sleeps when we're gone. When we are home, we monitor her water intake, take note of any clues she's giving, and keep her schedule as consistent as humanly possible. She is doing really well.
