| Help! She does not listen!!!!! I need serious help! I have Fiona trained to how I want her to be, but we have an issue with her taking off, and if we have neighbors outside she will take off. I have been keeping her on the leash, but my boyfriend just took them out, and she went flying up to the neighbors since there was another dog up there. Any help with how to make her listen better!? She is usually on the leash, but our house is the last one on the street, so that's why I dont ALWAYS put her on there. I"m almost tempted to get the clicker, and try to work with her this week. I get so embarrassed when she does this! Please....help........

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Mine will do this too. She is very well trained but LOVES people so much she just cannot help herself. Yorkies are terriers, i think we tend to forget that. So if they see something they love (people, squirrels, chimpmunks, rabbits), they are gonna run after them. Morgan has gotten better with this but i have to be very attentive to her when she's off leash. even then she sometimes tunes me out. i don't have a fenced in backyard either and i take her outside to potty off leash. I always check the yard first to make sure there aren't any critters in sight or neighbors. then i let her out. I watch her ears and her body posture. I can tell when she's starting to zone in on something so as soon as i notice it i'll clap or give a short sharp yell (oi!, hey, att) to get her attention off that object and back to potty business. its been a while since she's taken off on me now but i still know i'll never be able to let me guard down when she's off leash, and i know i'll never let her off leash anywhere but our own backyard.

| I do the same thing before I let them out as well. I always make sure no cars are around, or look up the street to see if the neighbors are out or anything. The other night I saw a big old fox in our yard running, so I waited about 10 min before letting them out again. I just think it will be safter to put her on leash while I have her out, since I cannot trust her these days. Thanks again for your help!!!!!!!

| I have the same problem. Merlin is an absolute people lover and as soon as he hears or sees someone he takes off, he might look at me over his shoulder when I yell but then he goes his way. In addition the next door neighbor's kids are outside and keep calling him. Our property is very large and a fence would be just too expensive. My husband built a big fenced in run and play area for him but I would still love him to run around free (Merlin, not my hubby). |
