Doggie Doors and Potty Training So crate training is really good and helpful and works great for my pups, but I have a question regarding doggie doors. Are they a bad idea then if we are talking about schedules and consistency? We have a doggie door and all the dogs use them - to go play outside, to talk to the neighbors, and to go potty.... Even my little Miss Izzy (1 yr/3 lbs), however, even though she loves going in and out of the doggie door, she is terrible about being consistent in using it to go potty. Sometimes she will go out to go potty and sometimes she won't. I've trained the others that if they go outside to potty, they get a treat and they do great with it now, however, it doesn't seem to make a difference to Izzy... any suggestions?

If you let the dog run free through the house, you will probably never get them trained. They are great at sneaking around and doing it, so if you never catch them it makes it hard to learn. One thing you can try is putting a bell on the dog so you can hear where they are in the house. Follow them around and try to catch them in the act so you can let them know it is wrong. Never punish them after the fact because it doesn't solve anything. If you take the dog out and it goes you should be right there next to her so you can reward right after the act. If you wait until the dog comes through the door and you say good dog and give it a treat the dog thinks it is getting the treat for coming in. It's all about being in the moment with them when it comes to rewards. I can say more later and if you have any questions friend me and send message. Good luck! Deb

The doggie door helped us quite a bit, but we didn't put it in until after we'd been bell training him for a few months. With the bell, he would sometimes just walk over close to it instead of actually ringing it, assume we could see him and read his mind, and then when we obviously didn't take him out because we didn't know, he'd just wander off and pee in the house. But once he had the doggie door, we didn't have to try to read his mind - he just went out when he needed to. But all of that wouldn't have happened if we hadn't been on top of him every second of every day for the previous couple of months, watching and whisking him outside mid-stream to finish any accidents he started inside. That really seems to be the key: frequent leashed trips outside (even if you have a fence) where the only focus is to "go potty," a treat while still outside immediately after the deed, and catching him in the act when he goes inside. It's a mind-numbingly annoying chore to be so diligent (whenever I think about getting a second dog, I just remind myself of those days lol), but that's what worked for us.
