| He destroyed the carpet in my closet! I have a super big walk in closet that my Asher likes to play in, so I put him there with his toys and food and everything when I can't watch him. Its never longer than 30 minutes at a time, and if I leave the house, he's free to wander my room. But yesterday, he got really upset for some reason and tore up some of the carpet in the closet. I suppose this wouldn't be a huge deal, but I live in an apartment and my lease is up next month. I'm a little mad at him honestly, but how do I get him to deal with being alone for a little while? He whines, cries and tears things apart |

| If he destroys things when you are gone then he needs to be crated.

| Maybe try using a baby gate instead of closing him up in the closet where he can't see out??? |

| The closet has a light in it, so he's not in the dark or anything. But I might have to try the baby gate thing because he absolutely abhorres his crate. Can't stand it, won't go near it, doesn't want anything to do with it. He'd rather sleep under the bed/couch, or in a corner. |

| He probably tore up the carpeting out of boredom or anxiety. As suggested above, I would try the baby gate in the closet doorway. Does he like music or television? If he is accustomed to certain noises, try running those things when you are away. |

Would it not be easier to let him free when you're there ? He is probably very bored and anxious if not used to being in a tight enclosure - even though it is a walk in.... Some dogs will rebel if they're taken from freedom to a crate or enclosed area and chewing and destroying stuff is just a way for them to pass time....just a thought !!! ps - don't be mad at him - he's just doing what dogs do

| While he doesn't like the crate, it might be for his own protection as well as your apartment. Also, Miabellaamoure brought up a good point. Yorkies love to play and need lots of exercise. |

| Mia, I've never actually seen him watch TV, he pretty much ignores everything around him unless its loud, then he's all about "fighting" it. The extent of his exercise is him running around the house, playing fetch with his squeaky ball, right now. He hasn't learned to walk on his leash yet, so when I take him outside, he kind of just sits there. I think the openness scares him a little. Red- Sometimes, I have things going on in my room that I don't want him getting into and that I can't immediately clean up. And if the room is fine, and I do leave him out with free run in my room, he'll sit by the door and cry. Most of the time, he's only restricted access because I'm trying to clean up, get some work done, or eat. He's especially bad about this when its dinner time for me and my boyfriend, who don't have a dining room table, so we sit in the floor and eat. You're right, he's probably just rebelling, because for 85% of the day, he's free to roam. Kirby, The closet was my alternative to the crate. His is canvas. I actually put him in it for about 10 minutes today, and he tore one of the mesh "windows" out. Last edited by gabbi-and-asher; 04-11-2010 at 02:06 PM. |

I see what you mean about worrying about the chewing....I never had that problem but I was always able to be right with mine before I had to work full time.....plus mine are much older and I don't have the worries of a young puppy..... hope you find some answers !! I bet as he matures he'll stop with the puppy stuff and you'll find you can trust him more.....Do you think he could be teething ? I totally forget the age they chew on everything in site but it's a thought....have you tried safe chew toys ? Does he like them ?

| When we are gone for more than a few minutes we crate our dogs. They actually like it. Most of the time if they aren't sleeping on our laps they go lay down in their crates. When we are leaving or getting ready to leave most of the time they head for their crates before we tell them but if not we just have to say OK crates and there they go. We do this to protect the house and them as well.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | ps - another thing only to think about and please ask questions about it as I've never used it - but there's a product called 'Rescue Remedy' for anxious dogs - I don't advocate giving dogs something like this but heard for many it's worked wonders for other types of behavior ...based on what I've read it has a calming effect You'd have to take in his age - his behavior and also - advise from those who HAVE used it but it's another thought if you feel he's overly anxious being confined..... There's posts about it here and on the net (google) but ask your vet first !! I think it's all natural but again - I've NEVER used it and this would be a last resort ....it possibly could help him get thru the destructive stage. I'd try to not rely on something like that but it depends on how bad things are and worth looking into if you feel nothing else will work. I stress though - ask your vet first ! It's scary giving them something that may have adverse effects but like I said - sometimes we need a little help if something is out of control and you feel he may be a danger to himself if he keeps chewing on things he shouldn't be.... I guess I was lucky with my girls - I never had that kind of thing happen - they chewed on stuff of course but never to the point where I was worried or they destroyed anything (cept for my husbands eye glasses and that was HIS fault for leaving them in reach) for such tiny dogs they can sure make a mess out of things we never think they'd bother with |

| Mine did that once out of bordem..Yorkies need lots of toys..When I leave and this is when he was LITTLE...I would leave on the light, a radio or tv and he had an area...Bathroom for the wee wee pad...and the hallway area for sleep and eating..Closet does not sound like a good place...Thats like being in solitary confinement...You are lucky he did not eat your shoes in spite of the closet!!! |
