| Oh Crap! I have a problem.... I need help desperately! I'm in the process of trying to potty train my 6 month old yorkie. I've had her for a little over a week now. She is a puppy mill rescue so she has had no previous training whatsoever. I work 12 hour shifts 3 nights per week. While I am at work, I leave her in her xpen that is lined with puppy pads, water, her bed and some toys. The last 2 mornings when I come home, the pads are on one side of the pen and a huge poop that has been stepped in all over the tile floor. I guess being crated at the puppy mill, she's used to walking in it. I make sure she poops before I leave the house but she still ends up going again during the night. I came home this morning to such a mess. I immediately gave her a bath, threw her bed and blanket in the washing machine and scrubbed the floor. I can't do this everytime I come home after working 12 hours..... Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do while I'm gone? I am single and don't really have anyone to watch her while I'm at work.

| Do you have anybody that could come by and give her a potty break and play with her for a little while half way through her day? Any older kids you could trust to come in and do this before or after school?

| During the day isn't the problem. I work nightshift 7pm to 7 am. That's where I'm running into the problem. My daughter is too young to stay home alone while I'm at work.

| Hey OrlNurse. I actually do not have much advice because I am going through the same thing. My dog Stella is at home in an ex pen with toys/water/puppy pads when I am at work. Stella has been crate trained ... but when I am in work it is too long of a time to leave her in her crate. So I usually come home to a poop mess. She is great peeing on her pee pad but she will poop on the floor and track it around. She doesn't seem to care. i have to clean her, the floor, and any toys that are in her crate every day when I get home. She poops first thing in the morning when I walk her and then again sometime during the day. She doesnt seem to care about holding it. I even hired a dog walk to come in during the day but that didnt work either. She would go poo after the dog walker came (I think the walk actually would stimulate it and make it worse!). SO I really just wanted to say I totally relate. It's awful to be so tired from work and then have to clean up as soon as you get home. I am just hoping in time my dog will learn to hold it but it's not looking good. haha. I hope someone else has a suggestion for you! |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Are you leaving her food in the ex-pen? If so, at 6 months if she's a good healthy weight, she probably doesn't need the food while you're gone, feeding 2-3 times a day is enough. I would feed and potty her before you go to work and don't leave food down for her. Will she go on pads, when she hasn't moved them? They make plastic holders for the potty pads, so they can't be moved around. That might help with her walking through her poop.

| 12 hrs is wayyyyy too long for a puppy to be alone. Too bad you couldn't take a few weeks at home to get her all trained... I've left my 4 month old in her crate for 8 hrs, and the same thing happened. I don't think there is much that can be done other than not leaving them alone for so long... eventually when you give her free run of the house when you are gone, the problem should solve itself. Good luck! |

| potty training Sunday I brought home 4 1/2 mos. old Bailey, a 4 lb. Yorkie. I chose the largest of the liter. We lost our Maltese 3 weeks ago. I started walking him where she went and presto, he peed. My husband had the great idea he could sleep on our bed. Fine for a night or two. He now gets up and poops on the floor. Bad idea, he goes in the xpen. The breeder let him have the run of the place so the crate is out. I took away the food and water in the xpen and made it smaller. Today no accidents. It hasn't been a week and he is doing better. I do not think you should feed him in the xpen. This dog is only 4 mos. old and when he came home he did nothing for 12 hours, so they can hold it. It is really trial and error. The Maltese I had was 9 weeks old when I got her and it took forever to house break her. I remember going outside with a bathrobe and treats at all hours. Bailey is already on his way. Just keep it up, consistency, treats, lots of going out and expect accidents. When I look back at the life of my other dog, it was a very small portion although I remember feeling very frustrated. |

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Sitter You definitely need a pet Sitter. There are people who will make a late night run. I have clients that I go see at 10 pm. I would do that. I would also take away her food when you leave for work. I also suggest a water bottle, so she has water but wont drink so much. Do you not have a break where you can come home for a bit? |

Its only been a week and a half and I only work 3 nights per week. I will focus more on pad training when I'm home and see if she can get the hang of it. Unfortunately, I work too far away to make it back to work in time. I have faith, she'll get it.

Jen, Actually I did leave just a tiny bit of kibble down for her last night. She eats 2 x day. I'm going to look into those pad holders. Any idea where I can find them? Today it was raining really bad out and didn't want to take her outside. She usually goes in my dining room and makes a piddle (even though she was just out), so today, I put a pee pad there. Sure enough she went on it...maybe it was just pure luck. Tonight before leaving for work, I put only 2 pads down and taped them in place in the xpen. Before I was lining the whole floor. I didn't leave any food either, just a small amount of water. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be better when I get home.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Lesley, I think Petedge sells them but you have to buy so much from them to avoid handling fees and the shipping can get expensive. I found them on Amazon, with free shipping....just be sure to check that you're ordering the size that will fit your pads. Amazon.com: Iris FT-650 Medium Floor Protection... When you do catch her going on a pad, be sure to praise her...let her know what a good girl she is for pottying on that pad! Hoping things are better in the morning for you, but if not, don't get too discouraged...with persistence and patience things will improve.
