| Walking two dogs...help!!! So, here's my problem. I have two dogs, a yorkie who weighs 5lbs, and a 70lb yellow lab. I don't have time or energy to walk them separately, but am having some problems walking them together. My yorkie wants to keep walking right by my feet and the lab keeps pushing me into the yorkie. I don't want to step on my little baby!!! The lab also pulls alot. The way it's been going is to walk with the little one in one hand, arm extended to keep him away from my feet and the big one in the other hand, constantly correcting her. I've seen options for two dog leashes, but I'm not sure if they will work for dogs of such very different sizes. Has anyone tried these? My arms are so tired from walking them the way I have been....seriously, I think I'm getting a better workout then my two dogs! |

| My grandma also has an 80lb Lab and I've walked her and Jackson, my yorkie, at the same time. I would suggest first training the Lab not to pull by itself. I highly suggest the Premier EZ Walk harness (Petsmart, Petco, etc). They have large sizes and small sizes. It's a harness with a d-ring on the front and it trains them to walk beside you. It's what helped me train Jackson. I think it's easiest if you have two dogs walking at your side so first work with the Lab, then practice together! I keep Jackson on my left side and the Lab on my right hand because she is stronger and I'm right handed.

YorkieTalk Newbie! | be the pack leader Oh wow, I can totally relate. I walk a 70lb pit and a 10lb yorkie. It is tough! The only thing that worked for me was to teach them both to walk on a loose leash next to me. Everytime they tried to pull ahead I would pull them back and say "heal." They both wear a harnas so that when I pull them back it doesn't hurt them and it is way more effective. Don't do the two leash thing, I tired it with two yorkies and that didn't even work. I can't imagine a big dog and a yorkie on a double leash. Just teach them to walk nice!! You have to be the dominant "pack leader" when you walk them. They will learn not to pull and to walk next to you. When I walk my dogs now I have to check and make sure they aren't off the leash because there's no pulling. It takes a little bit of time but yorkies and labs are smart, they will get it! |

| Thanks for all the advice!!! Both dogs are great walkers by themselves, it's just when I have them both at the same time that they give me trouble....I'll keep working on it though...Having dogs means never giving up.... they won't let you!!! |

| Walk them separately. It's not fair to do this to a yorkie. You have to make time for each of them since they deserve it. |

| they get plenty of individual quality time...but I like to take them for longer walks so they get exercise, it's not like it's the only time they get attention. what wouldn't be fair is to have to cut boo's hour long walk down to half an hour so i can walk them both. |

| Do you find after you've been out for a while they settle down? Usually just as you are near home? My 3 walk perfectly to heal when they are on their own which I ocassionally do just to reinforce the heal walking but like you say when they are together they just can't do it until they have been out awhile and then they seem to get into their stride lol. I think with my 3 dogs its a case of they all want to be just that little bit infront. And i am sure you give them both the same attention so ignore the poster who thinks they should be walked separately. Perhaps occassionally as I do just to keep reinforcing the good walking and they will eventually learn to walk together, well for your sake I hope they do. x

| When I walk my neighbors lab and my 2 yorkies, I put the lab on a 12 inch leather strap so he walks by my side. I use to differnt legth leashes for my yorkies, 5 foot for my alpha dog and 4 foot for the little one, but they still get tangled

| One on each side My two dogs are the same size. A trainer came to the house and she worked with them to each walk on one side of me. Marley always walks on my right and Pippin walks on my left. We worked with them one at a time until they had it down. Even if I walk Pippin by himself he is walked on my left side. They don't try to cross over in front of me. Walking them is easy. It's teaching Pippin not to bark when he sees another dog that has been hard. |

| Yes, for about the last 10 minutes of the walk they settle down and stop pulling!!! That ten minutes is probably the best 10 minutes of the day because I think they got it, then they start up again the next day for the beginning of the walk. They are getting better, i've been working with the lab a lot in the yard to get her to walk beside me and she'll do it, but all bets are off when we leave the house. My yorkie is actually the better behaved one because i've been working with him since he was 8 weeks old. The lab is my dad's dog that now lives with me. She's extremely willful and doesn't listen to me. I think she's having problems accepting me as a pack leader because she was with my dad for so long. It's getting better though. I've just had to go back to basic dog training with her. In the meantime, now that the snow is gone, we've been taking our walks on the snowmobile trail where I have the option of letting her off the leash, and she get's to get her paws muddy....my yorkie loves it too....he's not a big fan of being clean and groomed... |

| Get a stroller for the yorkie and after she/he does her business put her in it and walk only with the lab. |

| I had that same problem with Joel(6 pounds) and Rosco(170 pounds), Joel walks fine but Rosco will go in front of me, and the best way for me is for the big dog to be on a realy short leash, like practicaly holding his collar. Last edited by ilovejoel; 06-01-2012 at 12:47 AM. |
