| Snapping at people while on my lap My 2 1/2 year old yorkie has recently started showing signs of aggression. If he is on my lap anyone who walks near us or goes to pet him he will growl and snap and try to bite them. He is also doing this when he has a dog bone and we go to take it away. But, I could understand the bone thing, but what is going on with the lap, is it his way to say this is my time and he doesn't want anyone to interfere? |

| Stand up and let him fall to the floor (gently)! He needs to know that this will not be a good thing. Then ignore him for a few minutes. He'll get the message fast. |

| You're risking hurting his back or legs doing this.

Thor's Human Donating Member | I don't think he necessarily thinks he "owns" you or is dominant over you. Dogs consider people resources, just like bones. You as his caretaker are his most precious resource! You can use a two pronged approach to correct this. First, if he gets aggressive, immediately put him on the floor and ignore him. He only gets lap time if he's nice. Second, you can practice having people approach you (ideally, they will back up and not face you until they are on the couch with you, and this is less threatening for dogs). If he lets people approach, praise him and give him an extra snuggle. It does take a lot of consistency. I would take some time and actually practice this a few times a week until he learns better behavior. Have a friend or relative approach you 20-30 times in one session - that's the level of repetition you'll probably need for him to really get it. Last edited by QuickSilver; 02-20-2010 at 10:28 AM. |

| Another good thing to do it never allow him to jump on your lap unless he's invited to do so. If he does put him down on the floor and tell him to sit. Then invite him up. Teach him to share that bone. DOn't take it from him but walk pass him and throw a little treat down by it teaching him when someone comes close to his bone something good happens. Do this many times during the day everyday until he knows no one will take his bone. Doggy psychology is interesting. You never get done learning. |
