| New Yorkie Hey guys, I am a first time dog owner, and I got my 9 month old Yorkie on Saturday. Since Saturday Dolce has been very sick. Sunday the threw up and had diarrhea numerous times throughout the night. He spent all day Monday and Monday night at the vet because I was worried it was something serious or he would get dehydrated. It was just a stomach bug from stress the doctor said. Now that we are home he's feeling better. He's thrown up a few times today, but he's kept some food and water down. He came from an abusive home and I'm just getting really stressed out about the little guy. He won't fall asleep at night. He's very restless and he whines constantly when I put him in his cage. Despite taking him out ever 10 seconds to pee, he still wets in the house. (The owners told me he was potty trained ) I just need some advice and encouragement. I love the little fellow and I just want everything to start running smoothly. Rebekah |

Missing Yoshi Everyday! Donating Member | being in a new home can be quite scary and stressful for any dog...also you mention that he came from an abusive home and that can also play a factor... as far as housetraining....if he came from an abusive home...i wouldn't take the previous owner word on him being housetrained...he was probably left in a crate or cage all day or for the most of it...i dunno i cant really say.... it is going to take some time and patience but i believe you can get through the housetraining problem with consistency. as far as not being able to keep food down...and his size (not sure how big or small he is) i would keep some nutrical on hand in case of the sugar level dropping to low which can be deadly... where is his bed? maybe try putting a tshirt or your socks that you wore that day in with him at night...your smell can be confronting for him....

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Congrats on your new addition to your family. If he came from an abusive home it will take time for him to realize that he now has a loving "mommy". Give him lots of love! Patience, patience, patience is the word. He will soon come to understand that he is now loved very much. Good luck and please keep us posted. Post some pictures of him. We do like pictures here

| Congrats on your new Yorkie, and kudos for you taking on the responsibilty of taking him from an abused home! I know that new homes can be stressful on even puppy's from good environments, add the abuse, and it can only make it worse, as I'm sure he already has a fear of people. You'll just have to work with him to prove that theory wrong. It will take time but it will be worth it, and the bond you guys form will be so strong because of it. I'll also assume you may have been lied to from the previous owner about his house training, he's 9 months old, so it will take some consistency, and much positive reward and praise, he needs that anyway, and you'll get there!

| Thanks guys. That makes me feel better. I was getting a little stressed. He's 9 months and 4 pounds so I think the dehydration would come pretty easily with his sickness. He did much better last night! Didn't get sick one time. I was trying to get him to sleep in his pen next to my bed, but he wanted out and up on the bed with me. I think I'm just going to let the little guy sleep with me. They did keep him in a crate 23 hours a day. He's a little mangy because he's never been groomed before (but he will be as soon as his stress levels decrease!_ |

| Is there anything I can do to keep him from barking up a storm while he's in his kennel while I'm gone? |

| My girl threw up once because I scolded her, they just get stressed and upset very easily. Sleeping with mommy will do the trick at night. Regarding the barking, give him a treat to keep him busy while you rush to the door. Once he sees there's no one to hear him he will stop. If he throws up and has diarrhea while your gone he probably has separation issues (anxiety). Don't bath him or take him to the groomer until he feels/knows his at home. Might be to overwhelming for a lil' fellow. He is soooo cute, Congratulations and Welcome!!

| Awww he is *SUCH* a cutie! I would just try putting him in his kennel a little bit each day but let him back out soon that might help him realize your not just going to leave him in there all day every day like his previous "owner" Poor guy! I rescued a sheltie last year and his owner did the same thing but would leave him in his kennel for DAYS on end. Poor dog didn't even get to eat! I do notice that everytime I leave my house my sheltie will bark his head off but only for a few seconds! Good luck with the lil one! He really is a doll |

| If you can, I would suggest that you let him out of the crate when he's quiet, even if it's only for a short moment, then your rewarding him for being quiet not giving into the whinning. Good luck. |

| That's a really good suggestion. I don't usually put him in the kennel when I'm home. He's been a bit quieter (I THINK) when I've been gone the past 2 days, or so says my roommates. The problem is when they are home they are very loud. I don't want them to let him out because they won't watch him/ruin our attempt at potty training. (So far he hasn't gone in the house in a day!) Also, he had a very small crate, but I felt bad about it, so I got him a large one he can walk around in. Do you think that's a problem? Should he be more confined? |
