| What do I do when I catch him peeing? 5 month old Ruger seems to wants to pee everywhere now, and I seem to spend my day following him around with a bottle of Natures Miracle. I know I'm not supposed to scold him when I find a mess, but my question is what do I do when I catch him in the act? I yell NO! when I see him peeing on the floor, and when I finally catch him I put him on the pee pad, but of course he's finished by then and just walks away. If I walk him he goes outside no problem, and he pretty much goes on the pee pads, but lately he's been just going everywhere. I thought getting him neutered would help but it made no difference. So, what's the proper thing to do when I catch him in the act? BTW, he was just at the Vet and he doesn't think Ruger has any bladder problems or infections. He just tells me Yorkies can be hard to train, and Ruger's still pretty young. Thanks a lot. Last edited by ziggy925; 02-05-2010 at 11:12 PM. |

| When was Ruger neutered? 5 months old is a little early. My understanding is that neutering will help with marking, but not potty training in general. Confine Ruger to a very limited area in your home, perhaps one room with his piddle pad. You can switch confinement areas throughout the day depending on your needs and activity. If you catch him in the act of peeing where he isn't supposed to, don't yell, but give him a stern "no". When Ruger starts doing things right, you can enlarge his roaming area in your home. Always keep the piddle pad within easy access range. You need to eliminate the scent of pee spots from the flooring where Ruger has accidents. There are varying opinions on what works best: Nature's Miracle or white vinegar. I don't think it would hurt to use both, one after the other. Do a test spot on your flooring. I have also read that the Nature's Miracle needs to sit on the spot, or it needs to be reapplied a couple of times to work. If you have carpeting, investing in a steam cleaner would be worthwhile. |

| I would still use a belly band and take it off when you put him on the pee pad or outside, where ever you are choosing to train him. When you see him lift his leg , in a stern voice say uh uh... and put him on the pee pad and give him a treat!

| I agree, you must limit the areas he is allowed to roam in and watch him like a hawk. Take him out more often, after eating, after playing, after napping, etc. Give him a potty command and use it every time he goes. Also, it will help a LOT to praise him and treat or reward him every time he does it right. He is still very young, it will take time and patience and persistence. Never punish him for accidents in the house, it will only make him think it is bad to go potty and then will try to hide it. When you catch him in the act distract him with a loud "eh" or hand clap and pick him up and place him where he is supposed to go, PRAISE and I cannot stress that enough, praise him when he gets it right. And you must eliminate the odor in spots he has gone, or he will be attracted back to the spot

| FYI Ruger was neutered about 3 weeks ago and he was 5 months old yesterday. I give him a firm NO when he starts going where he's not supposed to, and I probably don't clean as well as I should. I have wood floors upstairs and they are the same color as pee. Tonight I will probably go around the floor with a UV light and see what I can find. As for confining him, I live in a one bedroom home that is very small. Upstairs is the living room/kitchen and he can see his pad from anywhere in the room. When I go out or when I am home I usually put a gate at the stairs to keep him upstairs. |
