| Peeing On My Bed - Advice Please!! I haven't posted in a while. As some of you know, I have a yorkie named Canyon - he'll be 2 years old in April. He has slept on the bed with me since day one, the first 6 months in his crate on the bed with me and then I let him start sleeping on the bed. No problems, if he needs to go potty in the night, he whimpers, I let him down, he goes to pad and comes back to bed. I recently bought a house in October, now Canyon has a big back yard and loves being out there and has now learned that the yard is where he goes potty - YIPPEE!!! I thought now with all the room, it was time to get him a companion. I bought a 9 week old male Shih Tzu and the first week he slept in the crate on the bed with Canyon and I. No problems the first week, though I did notice the towel in his crate was wet in the mornings, obviously peeing on the towel in the crate. After one week - he would whine, scream loudly and cry to get out of the crate I tried the tapping on the top and telling him hush/quiet. I even put him in my master bath with crate door open, bath door closed with potty pad in there, etc...he spent 30 mins screaming and scratching the bath door. I surrendered (I Know) and put him on the bed, awwww peace for once. I thought everything was going great, he's going potty outside (well he always poops outside) but he will tinkle here and there on the carpet if I don't catch him in time and at 9 weeks, he pees alot. ANYWAY, my problem is, I noticed yesterday these big yellow pee stains on my comforter so apparently he is peeing all over my bed at night while I sleep. The stains are at the foot of the bed, on the side I lay on. Why is he doing this, how do I stop him. I've been washing bedding all day. tonight, we'll try the crate again on the bed, if that doesn't work then I'll have to move him downstairs to his big xpen. Why does a dog pee on a humans bed? I know I need to limit his water intake in the evening with frequent outings, ok, I can do that. I will have him checked to ensure he has no UTI but I wonder if he's trying to establish some kind of dominance over Canyon and I? Can someone help??? |

| Hi neighbor, I'm no expert but I believe 9wks is to small for them to comprehend much. My advise is too train him all over and don't place him on your bed until his fully train. Some people say they naturaly don't pee were they sleep but it's not all cases. Your baby is too small too jump the bed and lets face it it might make it more warm and cozy. Maybe keep his crate next to your bed, yeah he will whine and cry but your the Alpha here. I did catch mine and gave her a BIG No and she got the point. Good Luck!!

Thanks fellow Texan. Yes, we are starting all over, I know he's very young and he doesn't get it yet and true, SOME DOGS WILL PEE WHERE THEY SLEEP. I have a feeling it's going to be a LOUD few nights, thank goodness it's the weekend.

Thor's Human Donating Member | I've heard it's even harder to potty train Shih Tzu's than yorkies. Also, as a general rule, a bed can be a big place for a little puppy. Even a puppy who doesn't dirty his sleeping area may think it's sufficient to pee in one corner and then sleep on another corner of the bed. I think you'll need to really soak your mattress with Nature's Miracle. Now that it smells like dog pee, even a little bit, I imagine it will be even more tempting. Are you taking him out every two hours, even at night? If not, he may just have resigned himself to sleeping in it. They can't hold it long at that age. Something I've heard works for puppies is to place their crate somewhere they can see you while you sleep. |

| Try to keep your dog off the bed To me what works the best is trying to keep the dog away from the bed if you have not walked him. That seems to work for me. My husband and I keep the bedroom door shut at all times because Little One would go and pee on it. I changed my sheets 4 times one day and was furious because for some strange reason he just kept hopping on the bed and spraying it. I bought some odor or dog repellants - some didn't work, others were too strong and it made me and my husband not want to be near it either, so the best solution so far for us has been to just keep an eye on the dog and make sure he's been walked before he's allowed to be in the bed room. I hope this helps a bit. |

I'm hoping not harder to potty train than a yorkie cause Canyon at almost 2 years still has his moments. Luckily, the urine had not penetrated the mattress pad to the mattress so all was washed. I think he must have to go in the middle of the night and doesn't whimper or anything to where I can hear him and it's a long way down so he's not going to jump and he just pees. Last night, it was back in the crate on my bed next to me where it's always been, he slept and so did I. I thought for sure the towel in his crate would be wet this morning but it wasn't. I also took away his water about 1 1/2 hours prior to bed. We spend ALOT of time outside so he's got lots of potty breaks, probably ever 15 mins. I think you're right, a bed is a big place and he's young, will continue to crate until I'm sure he's able to hold it all night or at least big enough to get off the bed and get to the potty pad. Thanks for the advice.

Thor's Human Donating Member | I don't think a ten week old puppy is going to be able to hold it all night. If he's peeing in his crate, he's pretty much telling you he can't. My understanding is that once they are okay with peeing in their crate, you have to re-teach them not to. Have you cleaned his crate with an enzyme cleaner as well? I really think you're going to have to get up at least once during the night to take him out / to his pad. He should not have a chance to soil it. Or get him an xpen. Also, you have to watch him like a hawk if he's peeing on your carpet. Every time he does without getting caught, he's learning it's okay to go inside. I remember with Thor, I had to spend about two weeks pretty much doing nothing but watching him. Even ONE eye was not enough. Once I was on YT, complaining about how bad he was doing, and I realized that he'd peed right in front of me! Basically, if you can't watch him, he has to be in a crate/xpen. | training I too am wondering what would be best for housebreaking. I am not home during the day so I can let my puppy out every two hours. that is why I haven't started the crating yet. I keep him in a play pen with his potty pad . He goes on the pad but then wants to hop and play and gets it every where. |
