| Training Hi to all! I am so very new to having my baby Cuteness I don't know were to start. My baby was litter box trained by his breeder but he never used it with me. He only used the pee pee pads and still does. He does have accidents at times were he totally poos on the carpet. Although I have researched how to train a puppy, I feel completely clueless lol. I would love to train him to use the bathroom outside but it is cold here in NY. He has gone for walks but is always shivering even with is thick sweater on. He will be 6 months on the 4th of February. Will it be to late to wait for the Spring when its warmer out to start to train him? Also how would I train him to not have mishaps on the carpet? Is their any books/websites that you can recommend? TIA Shima |

| Hi! At the top of this training forum, there is a "sticky" post about potty training. My 1-year old boy is paper trained. although we go outside a lot too. Is your little guy peeing on the paper consistently? For poops, try to anticipate his need to do it and take him to the paper (about 30 minutes after a meal and some exercise). Limit his freedom in your home so that you can keep an eye on him and his activity. You can start with an x-pen or a single room. When he does things correctly, you can increase his roaming space. Also, when he does things correctly, praise him and give him a treat. |

| What I would suggest is to train your pup with the idea of getting him to go outside with the back up of pee pad training for when you are either unavailable or for when the weather is not conducive

| Thank you both. I will look at the sticky to find out the best way to go about training. Right now he shivers when he goes outside. He doesn't even want to walk lol thanks again Shima |

There is a wide range of opinion here on the use of pads and training the dogs to go indoors, but I am an advocate of pad training, especially for the little ones in colder climates. A couple of the breeders/exhibitioners here have posted that their experience is that a pad trained dog can always be trained to go outside later, or to do both pad and outside. On the other hand, they said that a dog that is trained to go outside first does not do well with pad training later. I have also read where one person uses the pad in her garage, so the dog is sort of going outside. Try keeping a close eye on your pup for the hour after he eats, play fetch or do something to exercise him, keep the pad close by for him to poop, and when he poops on the pad, praise him and give him a treat. If he does his business somewhere else, one person suggested having the pup watch you take the poop to the pad and then roll up the pad to dispose. Good luck! | |
