| Can you re-train a 5 year old? My dog will be 5 in april. He has always had a problem with going fully onto the wee-wee pad where he would put 2 paws on and pee on the edge. But now it has gotten out of control. He will pee where he wants, and poops where he wants. He goes where he wants out of spite. If he wants to get on the bed and we don't pick him up and tell him to use the steps he pee's. If we put him in the room when he cannot roam the house he pee's. The other night our cat would not let him down the steps off the bed and he pee'd on our bed (where he sleeps also) And tonight we are eating dinner and nothing is being "dropped" he poops on the in-laws carpet. I will take full responsibility for spoiling him but my question is, is it to late to reverse this. We are moving into a new apartment in about 3 weeks, I am concerned because we will have 2 floors instead of 1 flat apartment and all of the rooms have carpet. Any advice would be great for a new start in a new place. For the first time since I have gotten him I can say I am honestly stressed |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Oh that is bad.. Really bad. I am sure with a lot of patience you can probably retrain him. I am a FIRM believer in crating, it has always worked like a charm for me. Once they pee on the carpet and you do not clean it very well, the smell is there and they will think it's okay to "go there" everytime. If you catch him in the act of wizzing or pooing. (in a strong tone) shout NO or a loud noise to distract him from doing so! Both of mine know the finger snap for anything bad they could possibly get into. All in all, when you are not there or will not be able to "watch him" all the time, crate him. He will eventually learn to respect you. I hope this helps best of luck to you my dear!

Senior Yorkie Talker | Hmm. I can now see why my mom has never paper trained our dogs. It can have it's down side. Does he do it, while you watch?n Make sure he knows what he is doing is bad, otherwise he will continue to do it. Get a potty training book, I am sure there is something in there for the oldies that we all have!

| I feel for you... My male like to pee on the edge too! I use throw away pee pads, and I bought a small piece of linoleum and put that in the area I use for potty (1 upstairs and 1 downstairs). Then I bought from Lowes or Home Depot, a shoe/boot plastic tray, then I bought some fake dog turf (online or ebay). Since my male like to pee on the edge, this is what I set up. Good size piece of linoleum A few pee pads, put the plastic tray on top of those pee pads, put more pee pads in the tray and tuck under, lay dog turf on top. I change pee pads daily, and 1x a week, I put the grass into a zipped up pillow case and into the wash with soap and bleach, then hang dry over night. This helps with peeing on the edge. Now my female has taken up to peeing in odd places too. It is a stress reliever to them to do pee or poop. Not sure how to break that. Mine are both 5 y/o now and I still use a Treat Reward. Peanut butter chips from the baking isle are really effective. |

If you cannot catch him in the act ever.. thats means he has to much run of the house and needs to be confined more. Start from the biginning like if he was a puppy...You can do it, just start all over like a new puppy lots of praises when he goes on the pad and you have to catch him int he act to let him know righ from wrong.... Good luck with everything. You can maybe invest in a play pen for dogs... it is way bigger then a crate and you can put the pee pad in there as well as food and toy and only have him have the run of that if your not home. Good luck with everything again and I know how this feels like because my yorkie is fully trained on pee pads and now I am trying to train her to go outside and WOW it is like training all over again...

| I posted a similar question, some time ago... it can be done, and you have gotten some good ideas here. Along with everything else here, I lurked around corners and watched her every minute, for a 3 day weekend. I caught every pp, good or bad... we are still a work in progress, but soooo much better. So THERE IS HOPE Also invest in a good enzyme cleaner.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Wow, I didn't know they could get worse, could it be anything medical? I know some breeders suggest putting a large soda bottle in the middle of the pee pad, for those dogs that like to lift their legs and pee, this helps them go more in the middle. Good luck, I hope you find some answers, moving usually creates more problems. I'm wondering if he's feeling your stress, and that's making things worse. I don't think dogs do things out of spite, that part of the brain doesn't exist in animals, but I know it can seem like it sometimes. I found a large washable pee pad that I put under Joey's smaller washable pee pads, it' works great!

| Thanks everyone I am going to put all of your advice together and see what I come up with. For now I am going to keep him confined to the bedroom when we are not home and then not out of our site when we are home. Its more imbaressing then anything with him going on the in laws carpets after assuring them that he is fully trained. Thank you again I will keep you posted |

Gotta be tough with these little buggers. Worth a few weeks of strong conscientous retraining. (I had cats once that got peeing on my bed and they went out the window never to be seen again.) Some things are intolerable. I believe Kids n Pets enzyme stuff works, too, for the environmental rehab - $5, Walmart, mop section at my store. And a black light to find the spots. All dogs can be trained, if you make it worth their while, it will be worth yours. | |

| please remember that although it may seem like it to you, your dog isn't really thinking 'they didnt drop any bits of food for me so i'm going to poop on the floor to get revenge'!! When he weed on the bed, it was because he needed to wee, but the cat wouldn't let him down, not because he wanted to make you suffer for any reason. Doggies don't think like that. Do you take him out for lots of walks through the day? Is he getting the chance to wee/poop outside. My brother rescued a dog that had been returned to the kennels several times because she weed everywhere. With lots of regular walks and consistency, she was finally housetrained, and they never had a problem again. It might improve things when you move and the smell of wee isnt about...i really hope so. Back to basics i guess...start training again as if he was a new pup. Hang on in there ..hugs and lots of good luck coming your way.
