| How do u teach ur cutie(s) that running out the front door is not allowed? Duncan just scared me to death... When I was trying to tell post lady that I have outgoing mails with doors open, he just run out! He was sitting away from the door and listend to the command sit and stay, it just happened in ONE second... I rushed out to chase him. It's just horrible, the post lady ignored me telling her that I have mails and Duncan jumped around her for a little bit, Duncan was just running everywhere and it's raining hard.. He didnt have this problem before, never try to step out the front door himself, just change his habbit all in a sudden some time recently. How should I let him know he should never do this again?

| That is so scarey! I'm glad that you got him back inside safely. I've installed a baby gate so that my furbabies don't even have access to the front area where the door is. They only go past the babygate if I am carrying them.

| I'm not sure how to teach them not to run out the door, but I would definitely put up a baby gate until then as a precaution. They have these short 18-inch gates that we use so they're easy to step over and the dogs can't get over, but there's a door through them. Four Paws Walk Over Wooden Gate for Small Pets at PETCO |

| Lesson learned here, only let it happen once. Now I always make sure Ruby is in my arms when the front door opens, even if it is just to get the mail or newspaper.

| I use this trick with Uni. Each and every doorway in the house, I go first, and she follows. Before you go through the door, have him sit, you walk through, then say good boy, come on! Do it every single time. i did this for a long time when Uni was a baby. So they will eventually understand that ALL doorways they have to wait for your OK to go through. Most likely Duncan was just trying to say hi to the mail carrier. If Uni sees someone outside, then yes she will run through, but only to the person, not to go down the street. Also, if i call her back in, she will come back in. Also work on your "stay". Have Duncan stay and you back away from him a few feet, with you facing him. Then come back to him and reward. Don't have him stay then come to you. He needs to know the difference between stay and come, and sometimes it will confuse them if you have them come to you. Keep extending the distance and time of your stay, until you know he got it. Then try doing the stay and you turn your back from him, then come back. In the meantime while training, yes get the baby gate.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | i used cesar milan techniques. (when he's trying to get his point across to a dog he does this shhhh sound) my dogs really respond to that. of course there's more to it, but it's pretty similar to the above post and learning the stay-sit command. it worked pretty good, at a time i thought they'd never get the point, but right now lewie and manolo sit and just watch as the door opens.

YT 2000 Club Member | I have taught Prissy and Jasmine to stay so they don't go out the door. This has worked well for us. Even though our yard is fenced, there are times that I don't want them to go outside.

| You have already gotten some really good advice. I just want to second the work on the stay command. It is such a great command, when they know it really well. Copper wont come for the life of me... but if I say stay he freezes instantly(so I can then walk over and pick him up of-course ) If food is dropped on the ground close to him and I don't want him to eat it I just use stay, it has saved him a few times. Also good if they are running off or to keep them from running out.

| You can train him not to do that; but in the meantime I strongly suggest you put a gate up so that he cannot dash out. I have gates at both doors that lead to an unsecured yard. One accident could be deadly.

| I just used baby gate when Duncan was a puppy. I dont feel good to lock him in somewhere, maybe that was kinda not smart, he's locked in the house when he's not a walk any way...

| Yeah, Duncan should be in arm too that's what usually the case. This time he just seemed being so good, so I put him down and he sat away from the door before he decided to rush out.
