| Ring a Bell, Have You Been Successful? We'd like to bell train Bella to ask to go outside. Our house is large and we don't see her standing by the door. She goes outside regularly with very few accidents. If you have been successful could you list the steps you followed. Also if you used a "Tell Bell" or "Dog Chime" could you let me know how you felt about the product. They look good on line but wonder if they are worth the money. Are bells on a string just as effective? Please share your knowlege, insights with me. Thanks! |

| I didnt thing the bells were loud enough, so i hooked up chimes in my front door.. I would sit down by the bells with a treat in the beginning, i would take lexi's paw and say ring the bell and say good girl then give her a treat.. i would do this every day.. constantly saying ring the bell.. After awhile she got it.. she wouldnt use her paw though,,she would use her nose to ring it.. i would inch farther back each day. after a few days i was able to go about 15 feet from the door and i would sit down on the floor and say, ring the bell , lexi would run towards the door, ring the bell and come back to me for her treat.. some times i would say it and she would run to the bell but her nose didnt catch the bell so therefore it didnt ring, she would turn back around and try to ring it again.soooo funny.. After she got that.. i would say , do you wanna go out? ring the bell and trained her that way.. so whenever she wanted to go out, she would ring it.. sometimes in the middle of the night, but just to be nosy, not even to do potty.. they are sooo smart, so keep at it.. it will work promise

| I have had success with some of my dogs... not all of them As for what is best over the years I have used many types of bells, jingle type, you see at Christmas, the ones with a dinger inside... right now I have a metal welcome sign hanging from the doorknob, I hear it hit the door... !. Hang the bell, and ring it each time you go out... 2 Ring it with her nose or paw, each time you take her out. Take her out every time the bell makes a sound (caused by her), let her know that the bell opens the door! If you are "not available... remove the bell... for the first month or so (like if you are away, or in the shower, etc...) Depending on the dog, it doesn't take long! Good luck

| I made my bells out of ribbon and I use the Christmas bells. There are 3 hanging on the ribbon to about 3 inches off the floor. When training, I say "go potty" then I take the puppy to the door put them on the floor, and physically take their nose or paw and make them ring the bell, then I immediately open the door. Then I always go out with them and make sure they go. I use the bells mostly because the other members of my family are oblivious to my dogs asking any other way to go out. They cannot deny the dog when they are sitting there ringing a bell!

Therapy Dog Donating Member | My two learned the bells too well..lol. They quickly associate ringing the bell with not only pottying outside but having fun and chasing squirrels outside. I can tell now when they REALLY have to go.lol..they bang those things so hard I think my patio door will crack. That's when I know they mean business and not monkey business..lol.

| I use a tap bell like bell hops use. You can get them at Staples for aroound $5.00. We just put Zeke's paw on the bell to ring it every time we took him out and said "let's go potty!" It did not take him long to get it at all. You could have one of these by both the front and back doors if you take dog out both doors. Otherwise, just have it in front of the door you take dog out to go potty. If you have a large house, after dog learns how to use, you may want to place bells where you can hear no mattter where in the house you are. |

| Thanks for posting this. I have been curious as to how the bell thing works. Our upper level floor is our main living area and we have a slider off the family room downstairs where Sophie goes to get to the back yard. Right now since it's winter Sophie goes out when we let her out and tell her to go potty or we follow her downstairs to the slider where she sits patiently waiting for us to open the door. I'm thinking of teaching her to ring a bell though but couldn't decide whether to get one that hangs (but afraid she will think it's a tug toy) or to get one that sits on the ground. I also wasn't sure of the procedure. Thanks for the tips

| If you are visual (like me) there are a lot of videos on Youtube you can watch. Just type in dog rings bell or train dog to use bell!

LOL me too. Razzle caught on pretty quickly to the bell ringing too! And sometimes now he rings it cause he wants me to come play with him. But I always let him out when bell is rung. Well almost always won't if there are critters in the yard.

| Thinks bells are a toy I am trying to teach Lexie to do this, and she has definitly learned that ringing the bell means she gets to go outside, but if she could have it her way she would live outside, so she rings them all the time! To top it off, when she does want to be inside she thinks they are a toy and will continually try and attack them. Its very cute, but not really practical for bell training to tell me when she has to potty. I am not sure how to teach her to only ring them when she has to go potty, so that I don't have to be opening the door every five minutes. ha I have been going with her every time she goes out now so that as soon as she pottys I call her back in. I still don't think she is getting it though. Any one have any ideas on how to teach your yorkie that the bells are not a toy, and they should only be for when she needs to potty!? |

When I started, I would take Kacee's foot or nose and ring the bells and ask her if she wanted to go pee. Then I would take her out. I would praise her royally after she went and then I'd give her a piece of cheese as a reward. I started her out on them as soon as I got her and she picked it up in a few weeks. She went through a puppy phase of ringing them for all kinds of reasons - ringing them all of the time. Even to get me to come play with her! I'm glad I stuck it out, because it has been wonderful. She only rings them to go potty.

| This is about the first thing Frisco learned. I just hung it on the doorknob, and rang it, and opened the door every time i rang it, while he watched. He was tender with it the first few times, now he wacks it halfway across the room if he wants me to let the cat in...It's been taken down temporarily... |
