| Chewing !!! Toby is 3 1/2 years old and we've had him a month. We've recently noticed he is chewing on the dining room chairs. I do give my furbabies chewy bones every now and then plus since he's an adult it's not like he's cutting teeth. Has anyone had any experience with spraying the bitter apple on places where you don't want them to chew? He only does it when we aren't around (I guess he gets bored even though we have another dog that is with him.) Thanks for all the great responses....................

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I haven't used bitter apple, but have used Bitter Yuck. It definitely worked for her. Sometimes one kind works better for one dog better than the other. Don't know why. But whatever works is good. All my furniture is in tack as I started using it the first time I saw her start chewing as a pup. She's 14 mo old now & still isn't chewing on things she's not supposed to. Got Bitter Yuck at Tractor Supply & have seen it a few other places. Either of them is certainly worth a try. Redirecting her attention with toys when you see her is also a good thing to do. Keep a good assortment of toys around, as some dogs never tire of chewing on something. Good luck!

| Thanks! I will be going to Petsmart tomorrow and getting some Bitter Yuck or something similar. He doesn't ever chew when we are home, only when we are gone and it's not all the time. So I will get some to have on hand so I can spray the chairs whenever we are gone for more than an hour or so.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | It's amazing how they always find some way of making liars out of us & how different they are. I was fortunate & the Bitter Yuck worked. Roxy's reaction to it was just a slow licking, a quiet, very thoughtful look on her face & slowly moving from the corner very unconcerned. Puzzled, I tasted it. Had an almost violent reaction to it. LOL! It was the nastiest tasting stuff I've ever put in my mouth & it was just a tiny bit on the tip of my tongue. Sent me grabbing for candy, gum, anything I could find close to get the taste out of my mouth. Ohhh it was awful! It took a good hour for the taste to completely go away. It's funny now, but wasn't then. I was just happy it worked on her though.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I'm so sorry it didn't work for you. These little furbutts can be such a challenge sometimes. I sure hope you are able to find something that works for you. Removing the chairs isn't really pratical. (heavy sigh) Does she respond well to the 'leave it' command or 'no'? Does she have bunch of chew toys around that you can sidetrack her with?

Speedy is three years old and hasn't chewed on the dining room chairs for about two years. She's only started again since Toby has been with us. Actually, removing the chairs is a possibility as we only use the dining room when we have company. We can never catch her doing it but it was so funny today, my husband said he found a "stick" from the chair she was chewing on stuck to her fur today. So she got "BUSTED!!!" LOL

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Oh oh! So we've got some jealousy going on, huh? Maybe some extra attention focusing just on her will make it all better. Doing things with/for her first & some extra time/activities. If you take away the chairs, that will leave the table legs for her to start making her next yorkie engraved project. Always a new challenge around every corner. I sure hope you find a solution.

| Thanks! And it doesn't help to discipline her when she's wrapped around daddy's little finger. She KNOWS she can get by with just about anything with him. I'm the "disciplinarian" in the family I guess. That's OK, now that Toby is here, I have my own little lap dog.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Same here. His way of discipline is to say something in a soft gentle voice that doesn't mean squat! And she knows it, of course. If not for me there would be no discipline & he'd have a monster dog not a well behaved one. I knew that going into this, so it's no surprise. She loves me just the same so no worries there. I'm just thrilled he has no more ugly remarks about rat dogs like he used to say with such disgust. He's a convert!!!

| How often do you exercise her? When I first got Scruffs he chewed EVERYTHING. My socks, pencils, post it notes, pens, hair ties, anything he could find on my floor or desk. Once I exercised him daily for 2+ hours per day he stopped chewing on things. It did take a month for him to calm down, and after that I only need to give him 45-1 hr minimum of exercise. I just had to get the craziness out of him, since he had never had an official walk in his life (he didn't even have a leash or collar!). It is just a suggestion. He also loves bully sticks and Kong squeaker balls so you might try that. Like if you catch her chewing say no and offer her the correct thing to chew on.
