| What do I do next? Ok well I have been trying to potty train Porscha for a while now, I did a bad job as a first time puppy mommy and now I am paying for it. I have changed a few things so this is what I do now: During the day I have my bathroom blocked off with a babygate, she has her crate in there, toys, food and water and her pee pee pad. The first day she peed on the floor, second day she went on the pad, my boyfriend came home showed her the pad, praised her and gave her a treat. She went once more on the pad the next day and hasn't ever since. This is the during the day routine, when we are home it's a different story. When we are home she is stuck to me like glue, so when I get up she is right behind me but it's like lightening so fast I turn around and there she is peeing right in front of me! I take her to the pad she just runs around, when I catch her going #2 I take her to the pad when she finishes I praise her and give her a treat. In the morning I take her to the pad, in the afternoon my boyfriend takes her to the pad when he thinks she might need to go but she wont go on it! Before bed I take her again still no luck....the other day she started to go pee pee in front of me so I took her to the pad I knew she still had to go but she just sniffed around, after 10 mins I took her outside same thing she sniffed for 10 mins and didn't go so as soon as we come back in she goes on the carpet!! Sorry this is so long but I just don't know what to do, I am looking at getting another puppy in 2 months and I want her trained as much as possible so the new puppy can learn from her. ANY suggestions would be great I know it's mainly my fault she isn't trained so I want to know what I can do to help her understand. Thanks so much |

| We should develop a potty training FAQ to send new people with potty training questions to... Anyway, the first thing you want to do is make sure that you are getting every last molecule of scent out of your carpet and other areas where she has gone. If you aren't using a medical grade odor remover such as would be for sale at your vet's office, then micro-traces of her odor will make her more likely to go there again. As for this part: Quote:
Are you sure that you aren't missing the signs? Sniffing the ground, walking in circles, sudden dissinterest in play, are all signs of impending potty-doom. Another thing you can do is develop a potty schedule. Chart her feedings, play-times, and bathroom schedules for a few days. When you get a good sense of when she needs to go (like every three hours or whatever), you take over and take her to the pad a few minutes before she scheduled to. 10 minutes is not a long wait. We have one poster who waited for three hours before the pup finally went. At that point, JACKPOT! She kept at it and I haven't seen her repost since. Seems to me that it worked once she was able to get the dog to understand what she wanted. I don't think showing her the pad will have a great effect. I have read often that rewarding a behavior long after the behavior is useless. It's best to regulate the potty habits so that you are there when it happens. | |

| I would only add the following: Paper the entire bathroom, when you leave her. That way she can only succeed. (she will have to use the peepad, because that is all there is). If you don't want to use peepads use newpapers. When you your puppy starts establishing an area in the bathroom that she likes to use, start removing the paper a little at a time, until you are down to one peepad. this may take up to and over a month to accomplish. If at any time, after you have removed sections of paper, she goes on the floor, you have moved to fast and must put the paper section that you removed, back and start again. (hope that makes sense) When you are home: xpen off or barracade the area that she is to go potty (where her peepad is). Make sure that there is no open floor area in this section. Put her in this designated area during her pee times; after play, before bed time, etc. and don't let her out until she has gone. She is free to wander in the sectioned off area, but she is not free to go anywhere else. She only gets out of "prison" when she goes pee or poo. This may take up to 45 mins to a 1/2 hour the 1st few times. Eventually, she will come to understand that when you put her in this area the only way she gets out is to go potty. and of course reward her everytime she does! In the meantime, when you are home, confine her only to one room at a time, so that you have better control of her and can catch her easier in the act and when she does go outside her potty area, pick her up, immediately and carry her over to the potty section and let her finish up. |
