| Help: bell training and pooping in house Background: Milo is 1.5 years old. He was pee pad trained, but I've since transitioned him to pee outside (crate training) because I don't want to deal with pee pads anymore So I've been teaching Milo to ring a bell to go pee using the steps listed here: How to Train Your Dog to Ring a Bell to Go Out | eHow.com but I'm kind of stuck. He'll ring the bell if I'm standing by it (without me saying anything), but he never rings it completely on his own when I'm just watching TV or whatever....it defeats the purpose of a bell. How do I get him to ring it to tell me he needs to pee? Also, he hasn't had any pee accidents in the house, but that's because I take him out every 4-5 hours and crate him when I can't watch him....but he poops inside the house he does poop on walks, but for some reason he doesn't let it all out. How do I fix this? And a final question about crate training: when can I stop crating him completely? I've let him have free range of the apartment a couple times this week while I'm gone for a couple hours just as a test and both times I came home to find poop on the carpet

| I wish I could offer you more advice then you have in the article you posted. Crosley we trained to ring a bell and we pretty much hung it on the door from the beginning. We rang it each time we went out and she picked it up pretty easily. We tried to train Camden to ring the bells when we got her 1 1/2 yrs. ago since she wasn't that into the pads, but she didn't really pick up on it, until now! It took her over a 1 1/2, but for some reason she just got it! I wouldn't say she does it 100% of the time, sometimes we walk by and she's standing by the door. Other times she will ring the bell 10 min. after she's been out! She has also started to use the pads that Wrigley uses as well! I would say stay consistent and he will eventually get it! Best of luck!

| We taught our little guy to ring a set of bells on the back door when he has to go out too. I've never read the article on here, we pretty much would just say to him "Ace do you want to go out?" and then ring the bells before taking him out. He got the hang of it pretty quick. He is a smart little guy. Now he even rings the bells if he wants food or has drank all his water. Like the pp said just stick with it and stay consistent. Good luck!!!

| I don't know about the other posters, but I bought a pack of bells like the ones you see at x-mas time from a local craft store. Then I took some floral wire and put the bells on there and bent it into a circle so it almost looks like a wreath of bells. I then used a piece of string and hung it from the door knob on the back door. It works wonderfully. The more bells you use the better so that you can here it over the TV.

| I made my bells myself using the bigger Christmas bells. That reminds me I need to get some more and now is the time to do so. Anyways, I used three pieces of wider ribbon and braided it together and braided the bells right in, Not the best looking, but it serves the purpose. My dog rings the bells all the time. Sometimes just to watch me come and open the door, LOL. But she trained pretty easy. I just always reach down and picked up her paw, or physically used her nose and rang the bell, then opened the door every time until she was ringing it on her own. Now she plays a game and will sit at the door and look at me. I just look back at ther until she rings it then I open it. LOL. |
