| Potty Problems hello all! i tried to get the file on the "potty problems solved" thread, but it must have been taken off or moved. anyway, the link didn't work for me. my baylee is 5, almost 6, months old. ever since i got her, she has been crate trained, and has only gone in the crate once, the day after i brought her home. i have 2 problems... 1) i can walk her for 20 or 30 minutes, and she won't poo. as soon as i bring her in the house, she darts off and poos within 5-10 minutes. how can i fix this? what am i doing wrong? i take her out every hour to hour and a half when i'm home (i'm a paramedic and work 24 hour shifts every third day, so that day she has to wait till my stepdaughter gets home from school, but she still never goes in the crate). and 2) she eats the poop! does this mean anything, and how do i get her to stop doing that because it's GROSS!!! thanks to everyone for any advice they can offer!!!

| I don't have much by way of advice for the poo eating, but there's a couple things you could try for the sneak indoor pooing. First, just never let her dart off into the house after a walk. Keep her on the leash with you while you're in the house. It's a pain, but at least she'll be constantly in your sight, and you can startle and stop her the second she starts to hunch up into the poo stance, and immediately carry her outside to do (or finish) the deed. We had to do the indoor leash thing with Nikko for at least a couple weeks until he decided that pooing outside was the way to go. Also, Baylee might be seeing the walk as a fun exploration time, and not as potty/poo time. From what I've read and experienced, it seems to be best to have a small designated outdoor area for the bathroom (we used a specific corner of the yard). When you two are in that area, it's all about business - no patience for playtime. So maybe when you get back from your walk and she's had the opportunity to get a quick drink, you could take her to the designated poo area to focus on poo time. Anyways, that's just a couple thoughts. Everybody ends up finding their own specific little tips and tricks to eventually make it work. Hopefully you'll get some other advice from other folks as well. Lauren & Nikko |

| I agree with Lauren. Being consistent with how she goes out to potty is key. A little play exercise in one area and potty time in another area is good. Also, it is pretty common for pups to eat their poo but nevertheless gross. I picked up a package of Forbid at the vets. It makes their poo taste bad. So I'm told. I read of other remedies but was afraid to try something not vet approved. Good luck! |

| Well I'm still struggling to potty train my Sophie. However I think some of the things you mentioned I can help with. Sophie did/does the EXACT same thing when It comes to the walking. From what I've studied and noticed. DOGS DO NOT LIKE TO ELIMINATE IN THERE HUMANS PRESENCE. For a few reasons 1. Who wants to urinate and have a bowl movement when your friend or parent is watching...NO ONE lol =P, and its the same with them. 2. Since they are still training and never "Do it" in the right place we are always scolding them, who wants that? 3. They are playing and engaged. I mean like right as your favorite shows season finale is about to start most would rather hold it till commercial break then leave right as Johnny and Susie are about to get together lol. Ya know? so with Soph's as soon as I made a playpen/enclosure for her BAM things are really starting to pick up. I feed her in there play with her then when she has to "Go" i put her in her litter box when she goes I click the clicker give her a treat and take her inside immediately its important for them to know that the whole reason they are outside is to go potty unless its play time or dinnertime or something like that. Anyways I hope that helps with that aspect of your problem. I cant say enough about making an enclosure it really really does help and its not too expensive I made mine with an existing baby playpen and some turf. Good luck to you! Constancy is key so just stay determined and you will start seeing results =D |
