| New baby girl + jealous Westie - I'm worried! Hi, We have had our little Lucy home since Saturday and my 15 lb Westie is very jealous. The first and 2nd day went well = but I think he figured out by the 2nd evening that she wasn't leaving. He tried bite her when she was on the couch with me and he decided he wanted on my lap. He pinned her to the ground later with a very scary growl and she was squealing like crazy. Now he hasn't actually bitten her and his growl is ferocious AND she is a squealer even if I put her in the crate for one second. BUT, it has got me so nervous that I have kept them separated since. Should I let them back together? Or just keep them separated for a week or two until they get used to each other?? |

| I would only let them be together while you can supervise for a while

| Separate them except when you can supervise. A Westie has very strong jaws and could really hurt her if he wanted to. Hopefully they will adjust to each other, but it takes time. In the meantime keep a good eye on them when they are together. You know anyone that wants to buy Westie collectibles??? I have tons and need to downsize.

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | We went through this pretty well recently with our mother in laws Jack Russell (we are there about a week or so every month). There's really good info here on YT about how to get your dogs adjusted to one another; the best advice I saw & what we followed was to be sure the "old" dog gets 75%(or close) of your attention the 1st few weeks. For us, this meant keeping the baby in our bedroom. The 1st 2 days or so we left the door closed which made the Jack curious. Next we brought the baby out in his crate & let them sniff each other that way. For a couple days after we left a pet gate across the bedroom door & let them acclimate a little more that way. Now we're able to allow them to play while we supervise; they run outdoors together along side me or DH, the baby on a leash of course because he so prone to following all those wonderful smells out there. Hope some of this may help a bit...Good Luck! Last edited by normarae63; 10-27-2009 at 03:29 PM. Reason: clarification |

| Thanks guys. I would never dream of leaving them unsupervised; heck, I'm afraid to put them together when I AM here. But Ringo has been doing better; he tries to get her to play now - however, even his play growl sounds scary and Lucy gets scared. Can't blame her. Hopefully, Ringo will adjust. I'll try to give him lots of special attention; he appears to be a bit confused right now. And he does have very strong jaws! For some reason, I was thinking Yorkies were a little bigger than what Lucy actually is. My cousin had one years ago and he was a 7-8 pounder. What kind of collectibles do you have? |
