OMGosh, please someone help me! Hello, I'm new to YorkieTalk, my name is Noel. I have a 11 mo yorkie that i adopted 4 months ago. It sure has been a frustrating but I love her so much... She still has potty issues... especially when we leave the house. She poops herself on purpose, sometimes even 3x a day. I dont know what to do. She is fully aware that outside is for potty time and gets praised when she goes poop. She never pees or poops inside when we are home, only when we leave is when she poops her crate. I believe she has some major separation issues.. but what do I do? I have changed the size of her crate, so now she fits perfectly with enough room to move around in and sleep but not too much room, I have moved the location of the crate from the kitchen to the bedroom. what else can i do to make this stop? Please help. Last edited by Morningbell; 08-01-2009 at 11:24 AM.

Instead of just praise, try giving her a treat when she potties outside.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Have you tried to give her the treat as soon as she goes, while outside? Maybe she doesn't understand the treat is for her going outside...instead she might think she's getting a treat for looking cute sitting...they're a lot like little kids...lol!

I have a few ideas... How long is she in the crate? Are you free feeding her or feeding her on a schedule? Or how many times per day. At 11 months, twice a day is fine, and feeding twice a day typically means they poop twice a day. You should be feeding her and then immediately taking her out to go. Walk around the block, stand in the yard with her, whatever you need to do to MAKE SURE she goes before you put her in the crate. At that age, you only want to put an empty dog in the crate. Stand OUTSIDE with the treat. She may associate the treat with coming inside, not pooping. I had a little "stinker" too! We got Sam at 10 months and it took FOREVER to get her to stop pooping in the closet. The bell helped, so she could let us know when she wanted to go out, but she would still sneak off. Basically it came down to standing on the porch and making sure she went twice a day and not letting her inside until she went. Now she's so proud of herself when she goes she does a little prance when she comes back to the door. I would also give her a small treat, maybe in a puzzle toy like a Kong, when she is in the crate. You can also feed her in the crate so that she more closely associates it with her "home" so she doesn't poop in there. Make sure she's not in there longer than she can hold it and make sure she's empty when she goes in. It will get better. They all start to really catch on around 1 year old and most of them are trained (if you work hard at it!) by 18 months It took us 6 months from when we got Sam to get her trained.

well when we leave, sometimes she is only in her crate for 20 min to an hour. thats on the week nights and weekends, and i know she can hold it all night. yes she is on a schedule.. in the a.m. around 7 and then when i get home from work at 6pm. i know she can hold it cause she went about two weeks without pooping in her crate. i come home at lunch around 12 or 1 ( and sometimes i go to work at 10 am) and within two hours, she has already gone. she is not by herself for longer than 5 hours. When she didnt poop for the two weeks, i thought we had finally gotten over our little bump... but do you think it is possible that it may have something to do with us moving? we recently moved into a new duplex and have been here almost 3 weeks. she didnt poop for maybe the first three days, and i thought maybe she was just getting use to the new smell of the new home, but so far its been three days in a row that she has pooped which has me convinced she is just back to her old ways. i will not let her go in her crate until she poops, and hopefully that will work. thanks!

It could very well be the reason she is regressing. I know this is said soooo many times, but keep doing what you are doing, praise her when she goes outside (give her the treat as soon as she is done going, not when she comes back in ) be patient and persistant and praise praise praise, it will get better.
