Donating YT 11K Club Member | How to teach Bam bam you're dead!? Teddy is a normally energetic dog so he usually learn things in one sitting..so i am trying to teach him to play dead. What i do is i say heal then i roll him over half way and tell him stay, and i did that a couple times and say good boy each time and give a treat, then i say it and let him do it on his own, and it was so funny...the first time he did it but he did it really slowly...like while he was doing it he looked at me like...is this right? lol But now he does it sometimes and sometimes not, he will just do heal most times and just stare at me...so how do you teach it correctly?

Thor's Human Donating Member | I think if he was getting it before, just go back to your original moves and he'll pick it up again quickly. Thor has known Bang for a while, but only in one very specific spot in the living room. Anywhere else, and he would just Down. We're working on getting him to be more flexible about it. I taught Thor Roll Over first (which took FOREVER), and then Bang. So you could try that too. I remember when I thought he would never get Roll Over, but he can do it in his sleep now.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i too taught Morgan roll over before play dead. I made her lay down first then moved the treat round and behind her head. once she was on her side i made her stay for a few seconds then said ok and gave her a treat. when teaching roll over i had to manually roll her for the first few times then i only used a few fingers, then one finger until eventually i didn't have to touch her. I can give hand commands or verbal and she'll do all her tricks.

i taught teddy roll over and he does it very well so far..he picked that one up in like 2 minutes...but for play dead...instead of lying down and staying there he rolls all the way over sometimes lol so im trying to work on that with him..he'll only do it if he sees me with treats. if i have nothing in my hand he looks at me like 'nice try' lol

| I always make Jackson "down" first. Then, I would do the gun motion and say "bang bang" and I would gently push him over so he was on his side. After about 3 weeks of doing the trick for 5-10 minutes each night, he caught on! He generally only does this trick if I have a treat though, lol.
