Won't use pee pads. My yorkie (just bought 6-30-09) is not using the pee pads. I got them about 4 days ago before that when I first had her I did not have any? Does that cause a problem? She still urinates on the rug as of now. When I catch her in the act I immediatley put her on the pad. By then she does not urinate anymore. Should I give her a treat after I put her on their even if she's not urinating anymore? I have pee pads set in 4 different locations is this ok? In conclusion, how do I get her to stop using the rug but use the pee pad correctly? PS If I bring her to another home on vacation will this confuse her?

Its best to have one or two pee pad locations. Having more can confuse the puppy and the association with potty will not sink in. My pup took over one month to truly understand the pee pad. Rugs was a favorite pee location for him. I evenly removed all the rugs in the house to help eliminate the problem. It's best to wait awhile before going to a vacation house until potty training has sinked in. Again having too many potty locations in the beginning will confuse the puppy.

| Welcome to YT You need to give it time she’s still a puppy. You may want to consider limiting her space in the house until she’s fully trained. You need to place the pad in one location; too many locations will confuse your baby. In the mean time, you may want to remove any area rugs you have out. Also, if you have hard wood floor, I would recommend putting the pad there. Good Luck

She's got way to much freedom if she is having accidents on your rug. She needs to be confined with pee pads to set up her for success. Every time she goes where she shouldn't, it will just set you back in her house training. Four different locations for pee pads is way too confusing! If you bring her to another home and let her have the run of it, yes, she will be even more confused. Potty training is hard work. Consistency is the key.

Yes, I am having wonderful luck with the pee pee pads, I have one in back of his crate, in case he needs to go during the night and another at end of kitchen, we have him blocked off in the kitchen, and he has the run of it, while I am in there (I work from home, with computer in kitchen) in his crate he goes every time on pad. the one in the kitchen? he will go a week no accidents, then the next day 3 accidents...so work in progress, but I think he is doing amazing, I have had him for a month now, and am amazed he does so well. Good luck, consistency is the key.

It sounds like your pup has way too much freedom. I suggest buying a crate and an xpen. This has worked WONDERFULLY for us and Brody was 11 weeks old when we brought him home. Right now we have the xpen pretty small, and lined the open area with pee pads and then have his crate in there. We crate him on a schedule and when we let him out into the xpen, he needs to go potty on the pads (now we have a Rascal, but before that it was pads) before he can come out and play. Since I know he did his potty business, we let him out with us either in the yard or the house for about an hour of playtime (still watching him like a hawk though, b/c he is young.) Then he goes back in his crate for some naptime and water and food. After about two hours we repeat the process. It really sets them up for success. They will "hold it" while crated by nature b/c they do not like to soil their own den. Then when you let them out, it is into the pen not just out to run around, so they have no choice but to 'do their business' right where you want them to. (If in the beginning they do not go on the pads in a minute or two, put them back in the crate for about ten minutes or so and then try again. Do not take them out of the pen to play until they go on the pads. The first few days this might be time consuming and you may feel like they are never going to 'go' and be able to come out, but they'll get it eventually.) THen when they do go on the pads, give them a treat and lots of praise and let them out for some social and exercise and play time. Limit the play time according to their age (if they are young they will be more apt to have more accidents). Then after play time put them in the xpen to potty if they have to, and if they don't after a few minutes, put them in the crate. The time in the crate goes by their age, as well. I would get rid of that rug, or at the *very least* get some Nature's Miracle and give it a very thorough cleaning and take it up for now. Also clean the floor underneath that rug with Nature's Miracle to kill the scent that will attract your pup back to that are. If you can, don't let him near that area unsupervised. You want to get him as far away from the bad behavior as possible, so that while he's learning what you do want, he's forgetting the bad habits. At this point I would not give him free run of the house. Small rooms under close supervision. Or leash him to you. Last edited by DanielleK; 07-28-2009 at 02:10 AM.

I wanted to add, if you do this process (xpen and crate) then you can recreate that situation in your vacation area, as well. The crate serves as your puppy's home away from home and the xpen gives him a potty area. Also you can make the xpen a bit bigger and give him a nice small area to play in and stay safe while on vacation. Also, at night we open the crate door so Brody can go potty as he needs to. It is a big help!

My puppy (11 weeks) uses the pad every time when he pees but he will not poo on it. Even when I catch him and get him over to it, sometimes he will run off. Any suggestions?

Possibly give him a second pad to poop - some dogs like to use two separate spots. If he prefers grass, can you take him out regularly to poop? Or consider getting a Rascal.
