| *Pooping "Outside" Crate Overnight* So I've mentioned this on other posts, but on both nights we've left him overnight for less than 2.5 hours or so, he somehow manages to poop on the outside of his wireframe crate. Does anyone know if this is more of a separation anxiety issue or he needs to unload more before bed? He doesn't eat past 6pm and we put him in the crate around 11pm last night before we let him try to sleep by himself. Of course we both overslept his crate time by an hour and a half, so when I went to check him around 2am or so, he had pooped a few times outside the crate in different areas. I cleaned it all up, let him potty on his pads (he was very anxious though while he was in his pee pen and watching me clean), and put him back in. The next checkup was around 5am or so at this point and Brit found the same thing, some poop outside the crate. What are we dealing with here? I don't honestly know if he has some deep anxiety issues or poop issues (he was diagnosed with Giardia but has no symptoms of it so he started the meds last night).

Thor's Human Donating Member | I'm sure it's not fun for you, but I kind of have to respect your pup for figuring out a way to poop without getting himself dirty. I have heard of this, but not experienced it personally. I think you can address it by getting a plastic crate without open sides - that way he was to hold it. Do the poops look okay? Not too hard, not too soft? If they are very soft, I would imagine he is having some stomach issues. I don't think it's normal for a dog to poop more than a few times per day, so I am not sure if that indicates digestive problems or not. Maybe call your vet and ask if the medications could affect his stomach. How old is your pup and how long have you had him? If you are leaving him in his create for six hours, he should be at least five months old. How long has he had this issue?

His poop is rather great actually. Not too hard and not too soft. The vet has him on Giardia meds because of the apparent diagnosis from his fecal sample, and it still happened before he started the meds. We might have to just try the smaller travel crate tonight and hope he doesn't mess it up this time! Thanks for the reply.

Thor's Human Donating Member | If he's ten weeks, you need to take him out more frequently - probably every two hours. Bad for your sleep, but that will probably help. Good luck.

| Yep, we are on that schedule right now, but missed it a couple times by like an hour which probably is the reason he pooped in the crate. Should we try the wire crate again or just go for the plastic crate tonight?

Thor's Human Donating Member | I didn't realize he was so young - I would stick with the wire crate and try to keep on a tighter schedule. He doesn't have full control of his bowels at the moment, and at least now the poop is outside the crate, not on it, and on him.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Can you put his crate in the bathroom, and leave his crate door open and give him a pee pad outside the crate? The little guy may not have much control, and if he's pooping outside the wire, it sounds like he's really trying to hold it, and doesn't want the poop in the kennel with him. I had to get up every couple hours with Joey for the first month or so, it's a little like having a baby.

I didn't even get Joey till 12 weeks and that's when we began the crate training. I don't know if dogs much younger than that can handle it. Breeders keep them in some type of pen with plenty of pads, and they actually can learn at a very young age to go on the pad and sleep in another area of the pen, but I'm not sure how much control they have over their bowels at such a young age. Joey's breeder also recommended free feeding till the age of 8 months since yorkies are prone to hypoglycemia. You might want to try this and he will develop his own schedule for eating and elimination that even suits you better. You shouldn't have to wake up every 2 hours to deal with his bowels, this would be too hard for most people.

| Noted! I'll free feed him just as we have been. We usually stop him from eating around 6pm then we have to give his meds as well.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Since he has been diagnosed with Giardia, I wouldn't be surprised if the unscheduled pooping was due to this. Best of luck, and hope the meds help! Learn about Giardiasis (Giardia lamblia) symptoms and treatment on MedicineNet.com
