| puppy II class has anyone ever taken their dog to puppy II class? i want to sign milu up for puppy 2, but my fiance says those classes are useless and a waste of his time. (i think it's important for everyone in the family to attend the training class, not just me and milu) he asked me. what did milu learn in puppy I? i said, she learned to sit, down, leave it... but he thinks it's a waste of time to go to all those classes just to learn a few commands. and he thinks we can just teach her commands at home. have you guys attended puppy II? did you find it helpful? thank you!

| The main advantage of puppy classes is socialization. The next time he asks, tell him she learnt to listen to you while there are other dogs and people around. She learnt how to communicate with the other dogs. She learnt loads of social skills that will come in handy later. She learnt a lot. Look at it this way, Puppy I is the first grade for the pups. Do you want your pup to have a first grade education? Obviously not, you want her to be a graduate To achieve this, you can home school, but what will your pup miss out on? Social skills. When the puppy has learnt this, you can teach her new things at home. But the foundations have to be laid in class. Let me know if you need another argument to help persuade the dh...

i did try to use the socialization thingy, but milu was actually really scared when he attended puppy 1. cause the puppies were all too big for her. milu spent most of the time running from people to people, whoever is willing to let her cuddle with them or let her sit in their lap. of course they loved milu, so they would keep her in their lap. (which was really annoying to me because i was trying to get milu socialized) but milu did get stepped on by the bigger dogs, and got scooped up in a yellow lab's cone. (the lab was wearing a cone to prevent him from chewing on it's paws, and it scooped milu up with his cone) so i also took milu to puppy socials and dog parks, but milu doesn't like it and spend most of the time trying to get me to pick her up. eventually the trainer told me not to bring milu to the puppy socials anymore because she was clearly not enjoying it. milu only likes to meet dogs one on one, she doesn't like to meet a group of dogs.

| I would suggest that you find a private or semi-private trainer. Some have classes of just one or two dogs. You might have to do a lot of work to find one, but it would help. May I ask, if she doesn't enjoy it, why are you taking her back there?

| I agree about the socialization for those classes. That's the best part. I had Jackson signed up for a puppy class and then canceled because I decided it was a lot of money and I didn't know if it was going to be worth it. I ended up teaching him everything at home and it was such a joy being able to train him one-on-one with just us and it made me proud. He also does his tricks around people and I've tried it around other dogs as well. He knows sit, stay, down, come, shake, high-five, roll over, bang bang (play dead) and dance.

| i have high hopes for milu and i want her to receive higher education. no, the reason i want to sign up for puppy 2 is because i don't think it will be as bad as puppy one. (the puppy one class i attended had way too many 'students'!!!! there were about 15 dogs in the class!) milu is my first dog and i was a 'brand new' dog owner at the time so i didn't know what to look for. now that i have some experience, i was going to make sure i talk to the trainer first and make sure the class i signed up for was smaller in size. i think milu will do better and we'll learn more if there were less students in the class. milu is NOT afraid of other dogs, she enjoys meeting them on walks or at pet stores. she just doesn't like it when there are A LOT of dogs in the same room. i am not sure if it's good or bad. i am kind of glad that she is so cautious, so that she can avoid being stepped on or injured by other dogs. but at the same time, i wish she didn't feel so scared. p.s. the requirement for attending puppy 2 is that they have to had graduated puppy 1. so i think the dogs are less clumsy and have a lower chance of hurting milu because they are not 'puppy' anymore.

| That is really great. Cash recently finished an intermediate course where we did long stays. He can now stay if someone with a dog is walking between us, if I sit down, jump, walk away, etc. For me, the second class was a lot more fun since we could do more things and the dogs were well-behaved, not crazy puppies any more. June will be starting her second class in August. Hehe, by 4 months she already has a graduation certificate. Hehe, high hopes here too. I think you have always known that you wanted to attend Puppy II classes, so go for it. Just nag and badger dh until he gives in from sheer exhaustion !

| I have bought tons of books and videos. I want my family to get involved with all aspects of training socialization etc. also. I want to get my dogs eventually trained as therapy dogs. I want to go to nursing homes, schools churches, hospitals. I want to spread the joy my dogs bring to me, and share it with others. I am along way off . I have found local independent trainers. Anyway wouldn't it be nice to find a training class for husbands and fiances? sit boy If momma isn't happy then no one will be happy! The sooner that trait is learned the smoother things will go. |

| I think because Milu isn't great with more then one dog at a time that the class SHOULD be taken You wouldn't be able to get her in a situation as controlled as a puppy class to have her work on it during. As far as the commands, that is just a trainer teaching you how to train your puppy, but the socialzation is way more important if you plan on spending time in places where she will be around groups of dogs
