| Front clip harness not working! Uni is a puller, so i tried out the front clip harness. It didn't work! She will pull so hard that the lead will go up underneath her front arm and continue to pull. I don't want to get the "muzzle" kind. I think she would still pull, I'm sure that would be even worse on the neck than a lead attached to a collar? She just gets SOOOOO excited when she sees the lead and harness, there's no controlling her. She does better on walks withOUT the lead and harness, she'll stay right by my side. If she goes off the sidewalk, i say "sidewalk" and she will get back on. But I really want the added security and peace of mind with her walking on the lead. So this is why we don't take her on many walks, and probably why she gets so excited when we do. We can't even say the work "walk", she gets too excited. We even said it with a british acccent while watching Victoria Stilwell and she still understood! We have to spell it now!

Thor's Human Donating Member | <<Oops, wait. I thought you meant that she was slipping out of the harness>> If the front ring harness is properly attached, the dog's chest should naturally be forced to turn back to you. I'm not sure how she could avoid this. The lead should not be going under her leg. If the lead gets up under her arm, let her work it out for herself. Some dogs figure out that they can make you stop to untangle them, so they need to deal with it themselves. ======================================== Is this a ChattiesMom step-in harness? If not, you might want to try that one. Other than that, you can: - get a collar and clip the leash to the collar for added security; - get a different harness that attaches more securely. The more secure ones tend to have a back d-ring and encourage pulling, so you will need to train her out of this. I don't think she could slip out of a Puppia harness. To discourage pulling, try a few walk sessions where you move as unpredictably as possible. Dogs pull ahead because they assume they know where you are going. If you suddenly spin backwards, go in circles, run, stop, walk, then turn again, they have to pay close attention to how you are moving. Following you like this is mentally hard for the dog, so only do ten minutes or so, and then let them play off leash.

| Good advice above ^ Also, which harness do you use? As QuickSilver stated, the dog's chest should naturally be forced to turn back to you. Jackson was never an awful puller but whne I had the harness on the back, he definitely did quite a bit of the sled dog pulling stuff. Ever since a day worth's of practice and using the Premier easy walk harness, he's been great. He's such a joy to walk, walks right beside or or behind me. Here's a video of Jackson with the Easy Walk harness, took it with my cell phone, it was kind of hard to video and walk the dog at the same time, haha! but you get the gist. yorkies :: VID00090.flv video by brit015 - Photobucket

| Oh my heaven's how wonderful Jackson is walking! Love that tail I have to say Buddy does the samething. When he walks he's getting tangled with the leash. I only used it twice and gave up. I guess practice makes perfect, I'll continue to try. Mine is from Cindy and he does come toward me when he walks but his leg get's tangled with the leash because it's so low. |

| Thanks for the vid britster. You see how the lead is near his shoulder? Well Uni gets excited and stands on her back feet and when she comes down her arm will go over the lead. She wants to go forward so bad that she fights the turnaround that the harness should do. Like she's pulling back. it's not from Cindy, it's just that brand they sell at petco, I decided to try theirs first b/c they said I could return it if it didn't work for me. maybe I will just order one from Cindy, her's are silk and cheaper anyway. I only tried the one time, hoping it was going to be an instant fix. I guess more training... Thanks everyone!

| I just bough 2 No-Pull mesh Harnesses on E-bay. They were $13.99 each. They're very nice and work well. My smallest Baron who is only 7 lbs. is the puller. I swear he thinks he's a Saint Bernard!!LOL Good-Luck...

Thor's Human Donating Member | You might just need to hold the leash tighter for now, so she doesn't have enough slack to get it under her leg. We use these harnesses exclusively where I volunteer, and I agree they can be a little awkward when the dog doesn't know to walk beside you... which is the whole point of using them. They do take a little getting used to.

| I suggest that the center chest "d" ring on a harness be used only in directed training sessions. Although I can only speak for the Walk-Nice harness that I make, the techniques should work using any harness front "d" ring or center back "d" ring. I do not recommend using the center front "d" ring for a causual walk - the purpose for the front "d" ring is to help train the dog to walk nice and not be a leash puller. Instead of going for your regular walk, you go for what I call a crazy walk. For these training sessions you might want to find a private area so your neighbors won't think you've gone whacko. Start off by walking forward, but before your furbaby gets to the end of the leash turn and walk in the other directon. You never want him/her to actually get to the end of the leash and pull before you turn and walk in a different direction. Turn left, turn right, do a 360, zig zag, etc. Use a shortened leash and hold it out by your side to help your guy circle around. Timing is of the utmost importance. You want to time your turns and zig zaggies so that you change direction just as he/she gets to the end of the leash and issue a verbal command as you change direction - say something like "no-pull" or "walk-nice". It won't be long before all you have to do is say the command to remind your furbaby to not pull on the leash. Work in short sessions several times a day if possible always using excessive praise whenever he/she is walking nicely and not pulling. If you are consistent, it won't take long for them to get the idea that walking nicely and not pulling on the leash is more pleasant. |

Awww thank you Carol -- I know you and Buddy can do it. The main reason you do the "Crazy Walk" is to get you baby in the habit of watching you and paying attention to what direction you will be going. When he "hits the end of the leash" a time or two because he is charging forward and you are suddenly walking in the opposite direction, he will get the idea that he needs to pay attention to avoid getting stopped in his tracks. This is a beautiful example of natural consequences that he can understand. If he doesn't pay attention, he will come to an unpleasant stop at the end of the leash. CAUTIONARY NOTE: Be absolutely certain that the harness is adjusted properly so that the center chest strap is in the mid chest region well away from the delicate Trachea area! | Thanks for the tips Cindy, i think I just need to practice more with her. It seems she pays more attention to me when she is off leash, and when the harness is on, it's like her crazy light goes on and takes over her brain. : )
