New tricks

My yorkie just learned how to shake yesterday, and we've been practicing since then. I was just wondering when would be the best time to teach her a new trick? Can I teach her a new one now? or would that make her forget the shake hand trick?

Hey! You can start now, it's doubtful she will forget! Once they know a trick, if you just
consistently practice it, they will know it forever. With Jackson, I would do like one trick
a week, sometimes two. So, first he learned sit, and then he learned down. So I would
tell him to sit first, and then tell him to do the new trick ("down") etc. Now he knows
about 8 tricks or so and I just always give him a new one.

I do my training whenever it is feeding time with plain ol kibble. That way Uni is good and hungry and no need to give unnecessary treats! Always have her to the same routine of tricks until they really know them, then switch it up! I am trying to link my youtube vid of Uni when she was 4 months old. Tell me if I didn't do it right or it doesn't show up. : )

And lucky! Jackson would NEVER go for pieces of kibble! lol. He'd like at me like yeahh right!

I think it's like people learning something in school... start simple, repeat, fine tune, repeat, then move to something new. By the way, high five is unparalleled in cuteness, and very easy to teach after shake.

Love it. Jackson is soooo darling. He sure took a lot of bullets! I didn't realize he had his full tail, it's so cute.

I wanted to offer up one tip, even though Jackson is way ahead of Thor in tricks . When Thor is in a Sit or Down, I have an Up command. I start with my right arm down straight, and then bring my hand up, pretty much the same gesture you would make to a person to get up. If he's in a Sit or Down, Up means get on his feet and jump all over me. If he's standing, it means stand on his hind legs.

Thor would never do tricks for kibble either. He thinks he's doing ME a favor when he eats it!

Thanks for the tip! I was working on an Up command and for some reason.. it was really difficult for him to comprehend LOL. So, we're still working on that one! He sort of does the "dancing" thing on his hind legs - it's really cute.

And yep - I love his full tail, hehe. He looks so young looking at that video now and it was only 2 months ago! So weird! I'll have to make a new one

Uni is sooooo darling. I love her! And I love the "Speak" command. I've been sort of trying to teach it to Thor, but I've spent so much time getting him NOT to bark, that I don't have a good trigger anymore! The only thing he'll bark at is other dogs outside, and I feel kind of weird at the thought of praising him in front of other people for bad behavior.

For some reason, Thor got Up really easily. I didn't even formally teach it to him. I think he just hates being in a Sit or Down, so he's looking for any excuse to get up. I think the gesture is pretty natural too.

We're still working on Bang! He's doing the same thing with Bang! that he did with Roll Over - He lies down, and then waits for me to push his shoulder. He actually did the full command from a stand a few nights ago, and I gave him a ton of treats, but he didn't repeat it. Still, we'll get there!

You will definitely get bang! I thought Jackson would NEVER get it! I had to knock him down forever, then one day it just CLICKED and he continued doing it! I know you will Thor sounds like an awesome little dog.

I just bought a yorkie or what i think is a yorkie. i took him to the vet they say he looks like one but his weight is 10LBS and hes 6 months old. hes an awesome dog but his alst owner would ahve him locked up in kennel all day so he's still learning tricks and potty training him on pee pad. For the most part hes doing well but once in a while he'll pee on the carpet. and suggestions on what i can do to help with his training.(i give him a treat ever time he does his business on the pee pad and tell him 'good boy' and i pet him. And also calling him he doesn't alwasy respond to his name(REX) he knows how to sit now only when i have treats but i dont want to give him treats all the time. If anyone can help me out that be Great

Cheerios are perfect - they are small and Yorkies usually love them! I also used pieces of cheese.
