| Hates being in Play Pen So, I bought a play pen/crate for my four month old. She is fine in there as long as it is not closed. She will play/sleep in it but she goes in and out freely. The other day I closed it while she was in there and she flipped out. I decided to wait until she stopped barking to let her out. She barked 55mins non-stop. I ended up just letting her out because we live in an apartment. How can I get her used to being closed in there? I really need help because she won't stay confined so potty training is becoming really hard. |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Wow! Your girl's got a set of lungs, I guess! I would suggest putting something really fabulous that she only gets in the crate WITH THE DOOR CLOSED, like a kong with some peanut butter. Try just closing the door for ten seconds to start, then work your way up from there. If she quiets down while in the crate, I would give her a great treat for that as well. Normally I'd agree with your strategy to keep her in the crate until she calms down, but 55 minutes - yeah, that's a long time. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Also, I would praise even the tiniest pause in barking. Like, if she takes a breath in between barks, give her a treat.

| It is hard just keep at it and you will get her trained. I used a tall laundry basket and took it every where with me, by the side of my bed etc. and I used the crate only when i was in the same room with her, cooking, doing laundry or if I had to go to the store. |

| I say put some fun toys in there for her to play with. Also make the closed playpen a happy rewarding place for her. When you close it and she is in it, give her some treats. Maybe a bully stick can keep her busy as well .

| My dog was beginning to whine when I put her in her crate so I bought a stuffed animal with big eyes. I then went for a short run and held the stuffed animal next to me for some time while I was still a little sweaty (bear with me on this one). I then put the stuffed animal in her crate and she loves it. Because it has my scent on it she loves to snuggle up next to it. If you don't want to go to the trouble of sweating on a stuffed animal, placing an old worn t-shirt inside her pen might also work. Make sure it's a Tshirt that you wouldn't mind if it gets destroyed. Good luck |

| Thanks for all of the advice. She has started to get used to her playpen. I decided not to force her to be in their but to give her a few weeks to get used to it. Now she goes in their all the time by herself. I think starting on Monday I'm going to try to start closing it again and see if she reacts better because she is used to it now. |
