Default What should I do we are both confused?

This is my first time posting so I appoligize if I mess up. A co-worker of mine breeds yorkies and had a liter of pups and she planned to keep the only girl which is Abby. When Abby was 8 mths old she ended up selling her (she was per pad trained). The lady that got Abby had another dog that was trained to go out a doggie door and so she expected Abby to follow it's steps and she took away the pads. For three months she kept Abby and then decided that she couldn't get her trained and gave up.

My co-worker asked me if I would take Abby and of course I couldn't pass up her beautiful little face. I went and bought pee pads and also took her outside every couple hours with my other dog Molly (german shepherd). Abby seemed to be doing really well at first going outside and having an occasional poo accident.

Well then my husband got re-employed and we could no longer take her out every couple hrs so she resorted to pee pads really well just a few accidents. Now all of a sudden she is using the bathroom on pee pads, area rugs and even our bed. I just don't know what to do my husband is really getting irritated and threatening to find her a new home, but I just can't phathom
that so pleeeease help

There's a ton of threads on potty training if you do a search of the forum and type "housebreaking" or "potty training."

But, the main thing... confinement. Do NOT give her free reign of the house as she will poop and pee everywhere. Put her in a crate (but for no more than 1-3 hours at a time, my suggestion) when she cannot be watched 24/7. Immediately after coming out of the crate, bring her straight to the pad or outside until she goes and then praise and treat her like crazy! If you'd prefer not to use the crate.... buy some sort of an ex-pen, you can buy at kmart or petsmart, etc.

Consistency and schedule is a key factor in potty training.

Welcome to YT!

I agree, i think your pup is confused. so many options that weren't thoroughly followed through. What you need to do now is confine her to a small area with her pee pads so she learns that she needs to potty on them only and not the area rugs or other carpet. OR if you want her to go outside, you can confine her to a small area like a crate when your not home and immediately let her out when you get home. the crate shouldn't have any room in it for her to potty in one area and sleep in another. i did this with my yorkie when i first got her at 12 weeks and it worked wonderfully.

like previously mentioned, there are tons of threads on housebreaking here so read up! and good luck!

The first lady screwed up. She was trained to piddle pads so she can still be trained to go on them. Don't give up. Don't let her have full run of the house, don't leave her alone if youre not there to catch her using the bathroom other places than her pee pad, and don't let her on your bed. You have to remember one thing, when a dog does something wrong, it's NOT the dog, it's the owner. Mine chewed up my leather sectional(it wasn't cheap), but, oh well, that was my fault, as if I didn't want them chewing it up, they shouldn't have been left in the house alone while I was out mowing, they should have been in the xpen. My carpet out here smells like dog pee, oh well, my fault again. This room is the dogs room, I just hope that I can replace the carpet sometime soon tnough, as it's also my computer room. Dogs live such short lives and they bring so much joy. Things like couches and carpets can be replaced, but, when our babies go to the "rainbow bridge" they can't be replaced.

Poor Abby.. please dont give up! I'd hate for her to have to restart at another home. Potty training takes patience especially with yorkies.. The first owner tried for 3 months and gave up? It takes a long longer then that... Good luck!

Default Won't give up

I just want to thank all of you for your advice. I could never give up on her I just want to be a good mommy to her and teach her the right way. The lady that had Abby before me kept her crated alot she has anxiety over it. When I take her to my groomer she can't crate her because she salivates and trembles. It just breaks my heart to think of crating her. What is a x-pen? I also have another dog that is free to roam anywhere in the house we rescued her when she was a year old and she was already housebroke. I just don't want to make Abby feel trapped. I spoil my dogs because that's just the way it should be, they deserve it and I just love making them feel so loved

An ex-pen is a like a childs exercise pen. you can get one for kids or you can get one for dogs. they come in all different sizes and materials. PetEdge: Search Results

Have you considered gating off an area of the house (or one room) for her? This helps confine them without having to crate them. Baby gates are great for this. Good luck!
