| Leash Training - Help Needed Hello I introduced myself and my new Yorkie, Cosette earlier today. Coco has lived in a Puppy Mill her entire life. She is new to my family as of Saturday. She has never set foot outside of a cage (until now), not to mention walk on a leash or wear a collar. I bought her a harness which she is comfortable in. But she freezes when the leash is attached. Was hoping someone could give me tips or advice on how to get her moving as I love to walk Tater (my male) on the hiking trails by my house. I have tried enticing with treats as that is one thing I quickly found she loved but that doesn't even work! I am sure it will take a little time, just need some ideas to get started. Thanks Amber |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Have you tried just leaving it on her while your in the house and watching her? she'll eventually have to move. Is it that she doesn't like the weight she feels attached to her? Try tying a light piece of string to her harness at first and move your way up to the leash .

| If she gets along well with Tater another thing you can try is put the leash and harness on her in the house and have Tater ready to go walk around the house with him on the leash and if she follows try picking up the leash and walking with the two of them together. |

| I had the EXACT same situation when i got Sammy from a puppy mill rescue group in november! (plus, it was winter here, so too cold for him as he was nearly hairless!). I happened to fly him to arizona for a vacation in february, when he wasn't as afraid of life, and i would carry him in my arms as we wandered in the desert outside of town. my mom said "he'll never know he has legs if you don't set him down", and just to show her he was too afraid to walk, i did just that. and he just stood there. so my mom says "take off the leash and he will follow us". and he did. for almost 2 miles!!! i tried a leash, and he wasn't great, because he was so afraid of everything, so we went back to the desert. now, when i walk my poodle, i put sammy on a retractable leash and he pretty much just follows us..... though we do spend some time standing around waiting for him once in a while |

| I took my four month old Krystal to a car show and cruise lask weekend. I had bought her a harness before I left and attached it in the house, but the cat just thought it was his play toy. She had never been outside with a leash on. She was so funny since she would just lay down and turn into a dead weight. She wouldn't budge. That was on the first day. On the last day, the second time I tried she actually walked around in her directions. She would still sit if I tried to get her to go the way I wanted. So I didn't push and she would walk a little. When we got home I put it back on her and she practically pulled me up to the door(I guess she knew she was home.) Tonight I tried again to walk her(after dark and the record heat we had) with her daddy and me to the mail box and back. She didn't make the mail box, but she would "dash" at a brisk pace for a short distance and then stop. Once she stopped short in front of me and then baked up between my legs. I thought I'd step on her if I moved. She made it back to the house. I'm going to keep this up. Just short trips till she more comfortable. Good luck with Coco. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk!! I'm sorry I can't help you with your issue as I have somewhat the opposite problem. When I take Abby out for a walk, she pulls so very badly and I am still trying to get her to walk "nice". Good luck with your little one. |

| Thanks everyone for your posts. I think I am going to try to hook the lightest leash I have to her and let her drag it around the house. I thought about hooking her and Tater together but she doesn't follow him around quite yet, she is more likely to follow me so I am going to just continue to try as well when outside. When I walked her last time, I also had Tater with me thinking she would follow his lead but that was not the case. Also I am thinking on a nice day, even though my yard is fenced maybe putting her on a tie out where I could watch her. Just so she gets used to the feeling as well. Not sure if that's a good idea of not, but when I was picking her up from the rescue that's what they did with her sis and she flipped out at first but then figured it out and after about an hour was walking around fine on it. I hope to get her accustomed soon so she can enjoy the excitement of a long walk! Abbysmom - Have you watched the dog whisperer? I know it sounds crazy, but I am a big fan of the show. Cesar shows some nice tips how to get them to not pull and stay behind you. I have tried some with Tater and he seems to improve more and more all the time (it's too hard to describe in writing it's more of a see and do thing.). I am sure there are some vids of it on youtube |

| I like the idea of her wearing a leash around the house, just be sure it doesn't get caught on something causing it to come down on her. Annie B was a rescued breeder from a puppy mill and I know exactly what you are going through. EVERYTHING is so new and scary to them. Annie was very food motivated also. I fed on a schedule as free feeding wasn't an option with her food issues. What worked good for me was to have her and Sadie (who lived for walkies) harnessed up and ready to go. I'd fix their dinners,(Who wants doggie dinner? Who's ready for dinner? Got her all excited for dinner.) I gave Annie a very small bite and then pick her up and take them outside. At first I'd just go 2 houses away, turn around so that we were facing home, put her down and with Sadie in the lead, walk back towards home. It only took a few tries and Annie figured out that the faster she got herself moving the faster she'd get to eat. I'd lengthen the distance and that along with taking her out to do things and see things helped her to overcome her fear of going outside to walk. Now all that said, she still preferred to be carried, because as we all know, princesses don't walk - they have slaves who carry them, but she did learn to walk on a leash. It took me nearly 2 years to overcome most of her fears and anxiety, please feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions. I will be more then happy to share my experiences with Annie.
