| Trouble with housebreaking Hi everyone! I am new to YorkieTalk and new to owning a Yorkie. I don't think I am having much luck with housebreaking. Does anyone have any really good advice for me? Actually, the poop is okay because I can tell when she has to do that, but pee. It happens so fast... Help |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Are you crate training her or keeping her confined? or does she have free roam of the house? are you training her to go outside or on pee pads?

| Success With all carpet and hardwood floors in our home, we bought a piece of remnant linoleum 50 x 50, put the wire pet plan pen on it and anchored it to the linoleum, and I've had success keeping her confined in the pet play pen in the house while I'm at work, with her crate in it and the pee pee pad in the frame inside the play pen crazyglued the frame of the pee pee pad holder to the linoleum so she doesn't tear it to shreds as even in the frame she'd flip the frame and rip the paper to shreds, I bought the spray(Pet Select Pee Pee Housbreaking Aid to spray the pads(without it she couldn't care less about the pads) and that did the trick, in 2 weeks she's trained and goes pee and poo on the pads consistently. At night I put her in her pet carrier, blocked off with boxes so she only had enough room to turn around, at first I didn't have the boxes in there and she'd pee and poo in there, but with the boxes in there and only enough room to lay down comfortably she now holds it from 11-11:30 pm till 6 am and then starts barking to let me know time to go and as soon as I put her in her play pen she does both, and on the papers too! When I'm home and watching her she has free roam of the house and will go into the play pen to pee and poo, so I think she's finally got it! 2 weeks is pretty good I think! Only weirdo thing she does is she stands on her hind legs to poo, but oh well at least she's going on the pads all the time now. Good luck and hope any of this helps you. Consistency in you schedule will get her on a schedule and make it easier for you both. Patience..... |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | Consistency and praise are the key! You didn't say how young she is (I'm assuming very young since you just got her). Until she is better with the potty issues, when she is in the house and NOT in your ever watchful eye, she should be contained in a small area with a potty pad to go on. When you do have her out with you watch carefully for ANY sign of even thinking about going...sniffing the floor, walking the floor quickly with her nose to the ground.....if she starts to potty, pick her up and put her on the pad or take her outside and say the word "potty or potty outside". Never scold her, but praise her lavishly when she does get it right! Again, when she does potty outside tell her "Good potty outside"...use the same phrase each time & she will learn what it means. She should always be taken out to potty when she wakes up from a nap, after eating, and after/during vigorous playtime. At a young age, she should be taken out often....even every 30 minutes or so. I think the more often she goes out, the better the chance that she will potty out there, and the sooner she will get the idea. Take her out into the yard, away from the door and stay with her, encouraging her to go potty. Say the words "go potty" when outside alot and again praise her when she goes. She WILL get the idea, but it does take time. Yorkies are known to be difficult to potty train (though I haven't noticed it), and she is still very young. Be patient, be consistent, and use lots of praise. Good luck to you and WELCOME TO YORKIE TALK!
