| crate training and sleep so last night was Toby's first night home. He cried in his crate for about 40 minutes, then was out til 5:15, went outside, peed, slept with me in the living room til 7:30. my question is, how long does it take before he knows the crate + darkness + quiet house = sleeping and no crying. lol i'm sure it will take a few days, but i was just wondering what everyones experiences with this was.... days... weeks? will he just cry less and less each night? |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | if you ignore him in the crate he'll pick it up really quick. it should only last a few days. however sometimes it can last longer. don't give in to the crying tho, stick it out

| i'm feeling like no end in sight haha. he does really well when we first go to bed, sleeps from about 10 til anywhere btw 1 and 3...then its over. he wakes up, we go outside, come back and from that point on it feels like he doesnt stop crying. i ignore him from then on except to take him outside and put him back in, which i do anywhere from like every 1.5-2.5 hours. i'm sure he must stop at some point. but its like i fall asleep to crying (really loud crying) and wake up to it.... i was hoping he would catch on by now.... fingers crossed he does sleep a lot after 6pm. i try to get him up a couple of times btw 6 and 10 when i go to bed for some hard core playing to tire him out, but keeping him up is nearly impossible. i feel like if he would stay awake though, he would sleep better after 2am. its almost like he just isnt tired anymore... |

| Encourage the puppy to enter the crate by placing a treat or a toy inside.Never forced him into the crate as this will create a negative association.Any time the puppy enters the crate, reward it with praise or a treat.Encourage the puppy to nap in the crate. At this stage the crate door should be left open.Once the puppy get comfortable with the crate, you may close the door and leave the puppy alone for short periods. Do not let the puppy out of the crate if it begins to whine. Such reward will reinforce the puppy's whining behavior. Instead, release the puppy from the crate when it stops whining to reinforce its behavior. Gradually increase the length of time he spend in the crate. You should also keep the crate in your bedroom at night. That will encourage him to fallow your sleeping behavior. He should be ok in a few days. |

| thanks... the crate is in the living room when we are all awake and he will go in there and nap with the door open on his own. i only close it if i have to do something and cant watch for him if he wakes up and comes out. he will whine when he wakes from a nap and i let him out and take him outside cause he usually has to go as soon and he wakes up. at night, the crate is in the bedroom. i keep the crate door shut at night. he usually is ok about walking in but then the crying starts. i'm sure it will get better and it never seems quite as bad in the morning as i'm thinking it is at the time haha one other thing is, we have another dog that is not crated and i think when he sees her at night he really starts barking... but i really dont want to put her somewhere b/c she was here first and is used to having run of the house. i dont want to put the older dog somewhere and think she is being punished b/c of new puppy and resent the puppy ya know?? |

You are doing the right thing by letting the other dog the free run of the house. In nature, dominant like to sleep together. So bringing the new dog in your bedroom and blocking access to you old dog could force your first dog so "win " is dominant place back by picking at the new pup. | |
