| Crate Training I have a few questions on what I should do with Chloe while we are at work. I just brought her home Friday. She is only seven weeks old so I can't expect too much from her as far as pottying yet. We introduced her to the crate with the door open. I took it with me from room to room. She has done well with going outside because I have been very consistent with her on taking her out. She is getting it VERY well. When I put her in the crate at night she does pretty well. The first time she cries I take her out to go potty. I expect she can't hold it because it has been around 3 hours. Then I put her back in. She cries, but we ignore it. I then get up around 5:30 to take her potty again and let her eat. She has not used the bathroom once in her crate.I stay up with her for a little while. I was planning on letting her play while I get ready, get some of that energy out, then put her back in around 7:15 because I have to be to work at 7:30. If I try to put her back in she cries and I think it is too much to ask of her to crate her all night, then turn around and stick her back in her crate. My husband comes home at 12 so he can let her out to use the restroom, but that is 4 and a half hours she would be there till he could be home to let her out, then she would have to be put right back in. That is WAY too many hours in the crate for her age. Also I am concerned with her getting enough to eat while we are gone So I was thinking of getting her a playpen or xpen type thing and making a little area for her during the day . When she is ready to go potty at 5:30, she is full of energy. I was thinking about putting it in the kitchen where we keep her food, and then putting her crate in there with the door open so she could go in there if she wants. She has a little bed she has been napping on, so I would put that there as well. I would put a puppy pad down so she could use. However, do you think doing the crate at night and puppy pad during the day would throw her off. We have to start this tommorow and we have never practiced with the pads. So far, because it has been the weekend, we have been here with her. She is either by my side, in her crate if I am showering or can't watch her, or on her little doggie bed. I have heard it confuses them to use the pads and go outside, but at her age I can't expect her to be totally understanding what we are doing as far as pottying goes. What are your ideas on what I should do with her while we are gone? Please help =) |

| I got up 2 hours earlier when we first got Lexi ( I know it is hard!) We then had walk outside time, feeding time, play time. I then let her in the bathroom with me. Totally puppy proofed of course. (they like the toliet paper roll) with safe toys like a Kong. She would even look in the shower. (she now will get in there at first with me)! Now getting plenty tired I dry my hair and hers! Then throw the suits on, a quick trip back out to potty and off to the crate so I can get ready for work. We are down to only an hour earlier now! I do come home at lunch 1 hour. Then the hubby comes home for an hour or the rest of the afternoon! Your right that she is very young, but she will get it. You know how time flys! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I only used the crate at night and a playpen with pee pad during the day. He seemed to get use to the difference. When you take her out of the crate you can place her on a pee pad, and this helps them learn what it's for. A rule of thumb is they can only hold their urine for each month of age they are, so a 2-month-old puppy can only comfortably hold the urine for 2 hours. Sounds like you are doing a great job, and so is she, but don't expect 100% until she's around 6 months or older. Remember, if they make a mistake, it really your mistake. Praise the success, and ignore the accidents if you want to avoid future problems, such as submissive peeing, and poop eating. Get a good enzyme cleaner, such as Nature's Miracle so they won't be tempted to return to the old mistakes. If they can smell a tiny pit of urine in the carpet they will think it's a pee pad, and they will go to that spot, that's why enzyme cleaners are the best, they totally get rid of the protein found in urine. Good luck, I think your idea is a great one.

| dogs shoud never be crated any longer than what their age is plus one hour. If she's 2 mos. old, then 3 hours the longest. I am not a big fan of crate training, mostly because I can't stand being in an enclosed area. I do believe in the xpen or play pen, as they need room to play. I always put mine in the xpen with food/water/pee pad/bed and toys, or you could put the crate in there and take the door off of it where she can go in there. Good luck on your baby. Not sure what her weight is, but, with her age, make sure she's eating and drinking plenty. You want to watch for signs of hypoglycemia also. Is there someone that checks on her during the day while you're working? |

| Are there any playpens or xpens any of you suggest or like? The area I will block off is not very big. I looked at petsmart.com because locally that's the only place I know to get them. |

YT 500 Club Member | When I brought Meg home, I made a little box wall to hold her in. I live in Korea and I've never been able to find an Xpen here! The box wall totally did the trick though. It was around 6" diameter, and her crate (with door open) was part of the wall. She had a pee pad there as well as water, food, and toys. I'd try to stick to just paper training for now if I were you. I paper trained Meg, then once it was warm enough I started taking her outside. She was around 4 mo old when we started going outside. She does fine with both now. Also, do yourself a favor and get a frame/border for the pee pads. Meg kept peeing off the side of hers and the bottom of it would get soaked. Talk about a mess to clean up.

| I like the xpen and you can make it all different sizes. My son got one a year 1/2 ago and it was really reasonable, but, can't remember the site he got it from though. |

| I think the pen idea is wonderful and I would either buy the pads that have some smell on them to encourage them to go on them or put some of her urine on them. We would dab a little of her urine on the pads and she started using them regularly. We also are at home to give her treats for going on the pad, so I don't know what really worked. I hope the pen works for you. I like the idea of the little one getting more exercise and freedom. |

| first off, Id wait on taking your little one outside yet..until all her shots are finished. We put scamp in a playpen in our room near our bed at night, he does great, and has never had an accident--he has a pee pad in one end and a blanket bed in the other with a few chew toys-- then during the day he spends most of the time in the kitchen, gated in with his food/water, bed and toys. I take him out to play with me and the kids several times a day when I am able to constantly supervise (I have a one year old and watch two other young children so cant leave puppy unsupervised no matter what), and he hangs and plays with me and hubby at night of coarse, and lays around with us watching tv, etc. He whines at the gate occasionally while in the kitchen but Im pretty strict on saying no or "eennnt", and eventually he lays down or plays. He has never had an accident in the kitchen--used pee pad routinely. I try hard to not allow the opportunity for accidents since hes so young....in the rest of the house...but of coarse we've had our share. I immediately remove him from the situation and put him on pee pad....we arent taking him outside until he has had all his shots. Id say the crate in your room at night is fine, then the kitchen or bathroom with a gate at the door, pee pad, bed, toys, etc with her so she has room to play, n ad sleep, while you are away. Good luck!
