| Noelle is ringing her potty bell to get attention! As soon as she hears the phone ring, she sits by the bell and rings and rings it, if I'm reading or doing something else, she does the same thing. I take her out every time she rings it, just to be sure. She sits by it and just presses her little paw up and down on it! I say, "Do you have to go potty?" and she stands up like she's ready to go out. She does not have to go every time. Should I put it away for a while? |

| What a smart little munch she is. I wouldn't put it away, but maybe when the phone rings, you could let her out when she rings it. When you want to sit and read or watch TV., then take her outside and keep her out by playing with her or even take her for a walk first. Then if she still rings the bells when you sit down, you may want to think about putting a expen around the door so she can't get to it for awhile. Wish mine had used the poochie bells. They were totally afraid of it.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Heh. There's a little stinker named Nikko who does the same thing. His owner is LaurenLemon. Hopefully she'll post on this thread with some good advice for you. I was really disappointed when Thor didn't take to the bell (he was also scared of it), but he potties SO MUCH on his pad I'm pretty grateful that the bell didn't work out. I have no idea what I'd do if he were ringing the bell 20+ times per day.

| oooooo boy, I am the LemonLauren with the little "stinker" named Nikko :-) We actually officially call him "turdbrain," but I guess that's just semantics. I totally understand your problem, and am happy to commiserate with you. At first, we ignored bell-ringing when we were pretty sure Nikko didn't have to pee/poo. At 4-5mo old, this resulted in peeing in somewhat hidden places along the edges of our living room, and we officially regretted ignoring his bell ringing, and we made some major changes to help rectify the situation. So please, at the very least, don't ignore the bell ringing, as abusive as it might become. And I know how ridiculously annoying and frustrating it can be, really. I honestly don't have any awesome magical solutions yet, as Nikko is only 6mo old right now, but we have found a few tricks and halfway solutions to at least help him to become 31 days now without any indoor accidents... and to cut back on the bell abuse. But Nikko is still unfortunately a bell abuser of sorts. We've just learned to adapt a little ourselves, to make our life a bit easier, and to somewhat cut down on his abuse. I'll help as much as I can, if you can give me some more info.... How old is your pup? Do you have a fenced in yard? Is she already housetrained, and is just learning the bell, or is the bell training happening in tandem with housetraining? Does she have the bell by a door that is only used for potty, or is this door also used for other things (like going for walks, car rides, people entering and exiting your residence, etc.)? When she does it when I'm on the phone, I do take her out. At first I was amazed at how quick she caught on to it and she has very few if any accidents in the house. But wow, I'm starting to feel like Noelle's servant. | |

| potty bell What's the potty bell? You folks are cracking me up about the potty training episodes. What a sense of humor you have. I love it. but I really would like to know more about the bell and If maybe it would help me training widget. Widget goes on puppy pads ONLY. He will hold it when he is outside until he can get in the house and make a run for the puppy pads. If only I had thought to buy stock in Puppy Pads. When I see him running for the pad I grab him and take him out. He watches the other dogs and wonders why they go outside when he has plenty of room on his pads for them to go. He holds it until he can go on his pad. Thank heavens his sisters have not regressed to his pads.(they are 2 years old). Widget is 8 months and should have been trained 6 months ago. Stupid little dog. |

| I'd like to know more about the bell for night time as we gate both dogs IN the bedroom with us. Sometimes Annabella can't wake Daddy (she doesn't bother me -the light sleeper-) so she has an accident on the floor by the gate. Luca sleeps all night without going. However about the door. In the day time, Annabella goes to the door to go on the porch on a potty yard. She goes to the door and if I don;lt see her, she jumps up and scratches the door. That always works to go potty BUT she has begun to use the door ruse on Luca. If Luca has a toy she wants and he won't give it up, she goes to the door (as to potty). As soon as we open the door, Luca gets up, leaving the toy, to go on the porch with her, Bella spins around, runs inside and grabs the toy. No potty for her!!!!! And I've heard dogs can't rationalize. They don't know Yorkies...... |

| I started using the bells Dec 08 for Carlie(10 months) and Rocky (3 years). Rocky is the bell ringer I would have to say Carlie prefers that her big brother ring them for her. Neither dog wanted anything to do with the bells until I tied a fuzzy squeeky squirel to the end of the bells. The directions say take them out every single time so they know that is what is going to happen. Eventually they will only ring the bells when they really have to go outside. But ..have they met a determined adorable yorkie?

| I am so glad to hear that we are not the only one's who have this problem! Leo does the same thing. As soon as I sit down at the computer he rings the bell. He also does it, as soon as I start making my lunch. My kids get so mad at having to open the door over and over again. |

| And I've heard dogs can't rationalize. They don't know Yorkies......[/quote] You know, I've had other very smart dogs in my life, but when I see some of the things she comes up with at such a young age, I almost can't believe it. Sometimes she looks at me when I'm talking to her and tilts her head and I KNOW she is comprehending and deciding what she is going to do. I don't know if I should be excited and proud or if it gives me the willies!! Well, I definitely can see I'm not alone in this so I'll just keep taking her out each time and pray she finds a new game soon. It's not like she doesn't get loads of attention already!! |

| Thanks for this discussion! I just ordered one for Ramsey. My friend has her poodle trained to ring a bell and has been telling me how easy it was. I've been wanting to give this a try. |

We too are having/had problems potty training Sophie. The bells were recommended but we have 3 cats and to hang bells from a door handle? Need I say anymore. We opted for a "counter" style bell, I think the same as Noelle's mommy and set it on the floor right by the door. Sophie was scared to DEATH of the thing. Everytime we'd ring it, she'd cringe and run away. We eventually got her to at least tolerate it. We'd take her paw and ring the bell and say "potty". And she wimper, but she put up with it. Well, one particular day we came back inside after going potty and we were happy and jumping and clapping and doing the "good girl" dance and she accidentally sat on the bell and it rang. She darn near jumped right out of her skin! I laughed so hard and she ran off into the house. That was the end of the bell. It stayed there for another month. But I think just yesterday my husband decided she was not going to do the "bell potty" and has put it away. I'm sure somewhere, Sophie has let out a soft sigh..... | |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Ha! Yeah, Thor's bell experience was very similar. I'm happy I tried it because the training I used to convince him to touch the bell ended up being a huge help in teaching him to shake hands, but I had to give up eventually. I also got a counter bell because at the time, the only potty bells I saw were ridiculously expensive and not long enough for a tiny guy like Thor to reach. FYI, someone here on YT sells very cute ones now. Anyway, I got Thor to the point where he wasn't scared when *I* rang the bell, as long as he was a safe distance away. I started doing training sessions with him where I would reward him when he touched the bell. One day, just like I planned, he accidentally rang the bell. He was scared out of his wits, but I gave him a fantastic treat and praised him to the skies. After that, he was willing to touch the bell, but he was super careful not to touch the scary top part. He acted like he was defusing a nuclear bomb. I also realized that Thor doesn't like to go outside when the weather is bad, and there was a good chance he would choose to sneak off and relieve himself indoors if it was raining. So yeah, the bell is over. I still think it's a really cool idea, though!
