| Tearing up the play area...why? OK, short story here. I recently started back last week to work again after being home for 2 months looking for a job. I got the puppy after I got laid off thinking that it would be a good time for that since I would be able to spend time with him and train him during the day. Everything has been going great until the past 2 days. I have a play area for him that is about 3'x6' with his pee pad, food, water and bed. He had started to tear up his pee pad during the day and peeing and pooping anywhere else since the pad is torn up. Why is he doing this? Is there anything to give him medication wise to help this problem. Anyone else had this happen? Thanks |

| I use a tray from Petsmart that holds the pee pad in place and it works great for us! I think it was about $22. She has never tried to tear at the pad in the tray and the tray also stays in place because it has rubber stoppers at the bottom. I also think that the tray helps a puppy distinguish the difference between going potty on the pad and going on the floor. I would get the tray and also make sure you have plenty of toys in there too... maybe a peanut butter filled kong to occupy time!

| I have a pad holder in there now. It has 4 little red round pcs were you stuff the edges down to hold. He still tears up the middle and eventually the whole thing. He has toys and a treat toy as well. Has anyone ever heard of giving a dog some benadryl to calm the nerves? |

| separtion anxiety It sounds like your little one has some seperation anxiety. My little guy is only 7 months old....and he has some anxiety issues too. We use Rescue Remedy for Pets that you can get at Whole Foods (if there is one around you, or you can search for it online). It's a homeopathinc remedy (they make a version for humans also). If you definitely know that this is a case of seperation anxiety then you can try that. Also check your local pet store for other calming aids. I've tried calming chews, Richard's Organic Pet Calm, Doggie Calm.....because my yorkie has a hard time being alone while I'm at work, but he doesn't tear up the house. I talked to a trainer about this, and she said that if the dog isn't tearing things apart when you're away, then it's more likely that the dog has confidence issues and not true seperation anxiety. I use to also keep my dog in a "safe" area for him with food, toys, pad.....and nothing would be destroyed...he would just try to jump over the babygate. Once we gave him run of the house during the time we were at work, it got a little better. Sorry for the long post...hope this helps a little. |

| pee pad holders I think I know which pad holders you are talking about and if you go to the following link you'll see there are many poor reviews on it. It does not really prevent the dog from tearing at the pad because the pad is not secured around the entire perimeter. Is this what you have? http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751790 I've also read a few posts on YT where people have given this product poor reviews. The one I use is a tray that holds the pee pad down inside of it and then locks it into place. I think it is much more difficult for a puppy to tear it up this way because all sides of the pad are held down. Here is the link to this product. I love it, but I'm definitely not saying it will work for everyone! Just trying to help with the tearing of the pad issue. http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...ductId=2752019 I have no suggestions for separation anxiety but I do hope someone else can help. Good luck!

| Sounds like your little one is getting bored He had you home with him for most of his life so far Now he's got to keep himself occupied while you're at work something dogs esp puppies aren't very good at Puppy proof the area where you keep him maybe try washable pee pads instead of the paper and put lots of toys to keep him happy \ while you're away

| He is driving me crazy now. I went and bought some cheap laminate flooring and wrapped that over the Styrofoam board that is down. He can scratch that and he won't do anything to it. I also went and bought one of the other puppy pad holders that was recommended. The 1st day he didn't tear the pad up. However, the 2nd day he had figured out how to tear at it! I really an at wits end with him right now, almost ready to get rid of him. |

| I had the same problem. I got the potty pad holder and on occasion they still would have some issues. I spray a couple of squirts of bitter apple spray on the pad and it has stopped them from ripping it up. I was concerned at first it would stop them from using the pad but that hasn't happend. I don't spray it all the time now but if they have an incident I will spray the next few pads and it stops the behavior again. I don't know if this will help you or not but it's something to try. Good luck.

| That was my next thought...to try and spray something on the pad to discourage that behavior. Anyone got any recommendations for stuff to spray? |
