| Hi all... I understand the benefits of an electric fence but I just don't have the heart to ever use one knowing that my babyboy would get shocked if he crossed it. Dogs are so curious that they would get shocked a few times before understanding what their boundaries are. He is like my child...so I could never. Also, I would never let my Yorkie out alone, too many risks. But I know a ton of people (not on this site-coworkers) that use them and are happy that their dogs can be out and about in their yards without supervision. Hope you get the info you need.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Everything I've seen says they are a bad idea, especially for small dogs. The shocks are generally quite painful. I've also read that many dogs will run through the fence despite the pain, but then be afraid to run through it a second time to return; so rather than keeping your pet inside, the fence may actually keep your dog outside its boundries.

| the pkgs. usually say NOT FOR SMALL DOGS..... Please don't use one. It can KILL your baby and it WILL NOT Stop other dogs/animals from getting to your baby either, so there is no protection for them from the outside...they would just be free food fof some other animal/dog. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | i agree about it being too powerful for such a tiny dog. however if they had a milder one or a milder setting i think the dog would only have to be shocked a few times before she got the idea not to go to far. but it wouldnt keep other animals out.

| I have been wondering about this too. We have a bigger dog would has one. He stays in the yard very well. He hasn't worn the collar in 6 months. I don't let Bella out unless I am out there with her on a rope. What I worry about is the times she darts out when we open the door. We try to be careful but with four boys and friends in and out we can't always. She just takes off and goes far. She knows she is not supposed to be out and well not let me get her. I am worried she will get hurt. |

| I wanted to share some information with you regarding my inquiry about this fence. I have been doing alot of thinking with this and I guess my 15 yo son gave me my decision. He (obviously against this fence) asked me what I thought of the long term effects of having all that electricity around us all the time and what it would do to the dogs long term. This for me had me decide not to use this type of fence. I also wanted to share with you the experience my daughter and I had this morning. On our way to taking her to school, we seen a dog lying on the side of a road next to a garbage can. After driving by her several times trying to decide if she was the owner of the garbage cans dog or not, we decided to stop. To make a long story short, we got her into our car and drove to the local animal shelter. At the shelter the lady who helped us told us that a german shepherd that was reported missing was the result of him seeing a herd of deer and running through his invisible fence to chase them. It has been 2 weeks and no sign of him. They came to the shelter to adopt another shep and put up a "real" fence as the lady put it. On a happy ending, we told the lady at the shelter that if no one came to adopt this dog we found, we would take her. (like I need another dog) |

| The problem is that a lot of people are not allowed to put up a real fence due to neighborhood rules. |

| We have a real fence up(fenced in around an acre). but, my 2 lb girl is not allowed outside without someone with her. small dogs have been snatched up by large birds before. If hubby or I aren't out with the little one, she's not out. |

| To add to the post above me. You have to remember that electric fences only prevent your animal from getting OUT. They do not prevent other animals from getting in and harming your pet. I was about to purchase a fence for my back yard so Dixie could run, but a hawk has been hanging around. I'm not going to chance it. |

| This is a silly question- When I let Katie out I always send my 2 big dogs out with her. Do you think they would be able to "protect" her from the hawks and owls? Its pretty funny how they feel that is their job and Katie wont go out without them. |
