Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Sit... Or not =( Ive been working with Macy trying to get her to sit. I do the treat over her nose, sometimes she will jump, but most of the time she cowers away and lays down, as if my hand over her head scares her!! I have never hit her, nor has anyone in my home. Shes been here 3 weeks now, and has gotten nothing but love, but her cowering kinda worries me. Is it normal when training? She seems to think sit means laydown

| lol i think Yorkies just cower... honestly- Layla is loved more than any dog i know- yet she still cowers. we always say- if we died today and someone else had to take Layla- they'd say she was abused.... we can't figure it out. Try doing sit with her back against the wall so the will back away from you and be forced to sit down when she hits the wall... then use your hand to gently put her bum down so she knows where it should go Hang in there! She'll get it! |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | The cowering just made me soooo sad! Shes never done that before But ive never put my hand over her head other than to rub her, and that doesnt bother her! She came from a petstore (ugh i know!), so god only knows how they treated her. Maybe i should start with laydown!

| Haha, sure, why not start with lay down? Nikko is great at sitting, but we just cannot figure out how to convince him to lay down for the life of us. He just jumps away or at the treat like, "What? I sat! Gimme that treat!!!" I've read that a hand over the head, even just for a friendly petting, is kind of a dominating move, so maybe she's responding to that. Do you sit on the ground with her when you're practicing tricks or stand or squat? Lauren & Nikko |

Ive tried twice today for a good half hour without much luck. We're gonna call it a day, and maybe try something else tomorrow. Im worried that the sit thing is scaring her...

Thor's Human Donating Member | What are you using for the treat? I've noticed that Thor is way more attentive if he really wants what I'm offering. If you use something super-enticing, her desire may overcome her fear. I would also say 30 minutes of unsuccessful training is a long time. I would try maybe a dozen times, and then switch to something else. As you said, maybe just teach her to lie down first. Does she know any other tricks? The first one is a big one, since that teaches the dog that she'll get the treat if she figures out what you want. Try to always end on a positive note. Also, are you sure you're using the right hand gesture? The treat should be at nose level and then sloooowly move the treat forward, just a little bit over her nose. If she's jumping at it, it's probably too high. Some dogs it just takes a while. If you can't get her to sit, reward her her if her butt moves even a little bit towards the floor, and work from there. One final thought - do you know the hand gesture for the sit command? That mimics an action that should make the dog naturally sit. Offer the treat between your fingers, palm up. Then curl your fingers up and towards you, as if beckoning to someone. This should naturally cause the dog to raise its nose, pushing the butt down.

| Funny...Johnny had the hardest time learning the down command. I even put him on his ottoman-think I read this how-to on here-and tried to coax him to lay down by putting the treat at his nose and bringing it lower. He would jump off the ottoman to get down to the treat instead of laying down. So we worked on the floor, bringing the treat to the floor To get him to sit, I put a finger in the center of his back near his hip and gave a gentle push. I saw a trainer do that with Martha Stewart's dog. I think the cowering shows how much dogs rely on body language. Absolutely agree with QuickSilver...always end with a positive!

| I have a couple of really quick questions. How old is your little girl? What are you trying to use as a trick treat? How long are you trying to train her for?

| The cowering is probably a result of where you got her from and with time that will go away but you can speed the process A LOT by making training interaction FUN just coming to her and holding a treat over her head isn't fun to her it probably sounds like she is being reprimanded make the giving a treat something that is fun get down on the floor with her and with a happy high voice give her treats and talk to her Pet her and tell her what a Good Girl she is .... this will transform the setting and do this a few times before you start the actual training sessions then it will be something she will look forward to and her interaction with you will be much better

If we had a little more information it would be helpful in answering even better. If she is a puppy their attention span is very short.

I am using biljac (her fav) - i had started with a nutro treat, but she decided she didnt like those I was trying to train her about 1/2 hour, but we've cut it down to about 5 minutes. I think she gets bored, and would rather play She will sit once in a while, but would rather lay down

Though once i start giving her treats, she gets sooooo distracted looking for more that training time is basically over. Its hard to get her to stop sniffing the floor for more!

| I agree, with her being so young, keep the training sessions to 5 minutes or less 2 or 3 times a day. Also, when you do the gesture for sitting, start with your hand just below chin level, then raise it to just above nose level. ps, I forgot to add, have you heard of or tried Clicker Training?
