| Barking first thing in the morning We have a 7 month old female silky and a 5 month old male yorkie. to be honest with you we dont really have any problems with either of them besides getting them housebroken but thats another story. our big problem is with the 5 month old male. getting them to go to bed is fine, they dont bark they just go to sleep but when he wakes up in the morning anywhere from 4am -6am and just barks like the world is ending and wont stop for nothing until he is out, it happens every single day, this is the only time he will bark like that. we have them both in a crate separated since they still arent house broken. we have tried the sonar barking thing which was a joke. tried the bark (shock) collar which kinda worked until he figured out he could just bark a little bit lower to where it would shock him but still loud enough to annoy you. a muzzle which didnt do anything. we tried to put him in our room at night which he wouldnt even go to sleep. i havent had a decent nights sleep since i hate to say it but before we got him. We would hate to find him another home because of this, so this is why im here to look for possible solutions for this. our female is basically an angel she doesnt bark. our second problem is trying to get them housebroken. they are both in a crate at night just big enough for them to stand up and turn around. everynow and then they will (pee) in there. they both stopped going #2 lol in the cage. they both know to go outside but they get lazy and dont tell us and still continue to go in the house. help im tired |

| welcome to YT. I would imagine he's barking because he needs out to do his business. He's a little puppy - they need to go frequently. How long are they crated for? A dog will not go in their crate unless they can hold it any longer. If you want them to have another option - have you considered using an x-pen and potty pads. That way they can have a bed at one end of the x-pen & a pad at the other. Please do not use those bark devices - really they can be harmful or create more behavior problems. Yorkies are notorious for being difficult to housebreak, I don't know about Silkies. But they are both puppies and it does take a lot of time, many may say to age 1 or beyond

| charlie just started barking in the morning too. He has never done this before...He is 6 months. He barks and barks even though he doesn't need anything. This is driving him crazy too. I am not sure what to do with him either. |

| When we first brought our puppy Chico home he slept on his bed next to our bed. He would go to bed at 8:30-9 and wake around 4a to fuss and be pottied. On Chico's fourth night home my husband brought him up on our bed for the first time to hang out before we went to sleep. Chico flopped down and fell fast asleep, to our amazement he stayed that way til 6:30 the next morning. Now Chico sleeps on our bed with us going to bed between 8:30-9 and waking up at 6:30. For me it's a small price to pay for a full night sleep, and I figure that it is a comfort for him sleep with part of his "pack" and not alone. If you don't want to have him on your bed, maybe try getting him a stuffed animal that you put your smell on. Chico has a stuffed Yorkie that he plays with and when we first brought him home he would lay with it like a littermate. Good luck with finding a solution, sleep loss is no fun. |

| I have been extremely lucky with Baxter... He sleeps in his crate beside our bed. I know I should be careful what I ask for but I wish Baxter would bark at us when he does have to go. The first week I would go to sleep at 11pm and wake up at 2am, 4am then 6 to let him out. Gradually (every few days) I have stretched the intervals. I soon went to 11pm, 3:30am, 7am. Now he goes out before going to be at 11 and makes it till 7am (when i get up for work). Schedule is important to a puppy so maybe giving him more intervals to go out and do his business will allow him to sleep better/longer. Walter |

| Wall-E is 10 months and he has developed this annoying barking habit at 5am... don't really know what to do either with him except revert back to training basics like spray his face with a spray bottle of water and say "Quiet!" until he learns not to bark... I hope that does the trick. It worked when he was a tiny puppy like 3-5 months old and would bark in his pen for attention, then we stopped using the water bottle and gave him free roam of our room which he did well with. Now we moved into a different house and put him back into his pen at night b/c he marks everything in sight and I can't stand our bedroom smelling like urine, but unfortunately now he barks ALOT MORE being in his pen than when he had free roam.... sigh. I love my yorkie but he is difficult! I have a female chihuahua and have NO problems with her- no barking- no potty training issues- she goes right into her pen and sleeps all night... |

| I am sorry your having a hard time with your male Yorkie. He is only 5 months old. He might hate his crate, and want out , so he is barking. He might want attention too. i am not a fan of using those shock collars. That is negative training and could injure a small puppy. He learned quickly a way around it too, which means he is a clever little guy. Use a xpen and potty pads for him, they are more pet friendly. Your little pup is not trying to be bad and annoy you . He is is not .

| If they're not barking to go potty, which does sounds like the most likely reason to bark, they may be barking because they are hearing something that happens around that time every morning - maybe the neighbor leaves for work then, or maybe a nearby bird wakes up and starts making noise, or who knows what. We've had that issue recently with the other half of our duplex being shown to potential buyers early in the morning on the weekends. It was driving me crazy. So I tried turning on the bathroom fan to create some white noise to hopefully drown out the other little noises - and it worked! We even had someone drilling into our concrete on the front porch the other day, but with the white noise from the fan, Nikko didn't even act like he noticed. Lauren & Nikko |

I've never personally done it but if a dog is barking that bad, you have to resort to things like spraying water in their face. It doesn't hurt them, just startles them and makes them stop thinking about the barking.

| I do not think this is a good method to train a dog. Would you want water sprayed in your face? There are other methods that work, include shaking a can with some coins in it.

| Chloe ( who is 10 months) has started doing this also ! Both my dogs are crated at night ( well Chloe is in her playpen ) and they usually go to sleep just fine , but at around 5a.m Chloe starts barking like a little nut ( luckily their room is on the other side of the house so it's very faint ) I know she doesn't have to potty because she uses potty pads which she has in her pen with her , their room is warm so I know she isn't cold , and she can see Sydney so I know she isn't lonely...so I have no idea why she barks except she is done sleeping and just wants to get up and play. I don't want her sleeping with us ( our bed is very high and I'm afraid she will fall out and get hurt) so dh is going to sound proof their room then they can just annoy each other and not us Maybe you could get a bigger pen and use puppy pads and see if that stops her , she may just have to potty and with the pads she wouldn't have to wake you.

| last night we tried something different than having them sleep in their crate. we have been using an old playpen in the living room when we cant always watch them. that way they have a little bit of room to move around and can be with each other. so last night i let them both sleep in the playpen together, i woke up at 230am to let them (mainly him) out to go, then put them back in the playpen and actually woke up to my alarm clock at 630am instead of diamond barking his brains out. so it sounds like he's been barking because of needing to go out. so as much as it sucks having to get up now in the middle of the night i guess im going to have to do this now on. we have guests coming in this weekend and i was trying to figure something out so the dogs dont the barking this weekend while they are here visiting. |
