| Lots of questions - new puppy in the family After reading threads back to page 14, I'm still not sure what is going on. We got our puppy a week ago. He came from a breeder who gifted him to us. We still don't know why. The breeder has 5 kids who all play with the puppies but I have no idea how he was trained or anything. He is 13 weeks old. He is crate trained and it is his safe spot. Our kids (14, 12, 9 and 7) all know not to get him out of the crate or take a toy out that he has taken in there. He loves going into his crate (a cat transporter) and sleeps there all night until someone wakes and goes to the bathroom and then he's UP! He comes to us and sits. He sits a LOT. What do we do with that? He pees somewhat frequently and yesterday I had him at the vet, the bank (here that is a 2-hour process) and the dentist (twice). We were gone from 11:00 until 3pm and he wouldn't pee outside even though he had opportunities, but waited until he got to "his spot" here. Last night I thought he had to poop and had the 14yo take him out but he ended up pooping outside but in the house. Our house is 1/2 outside (kitchen and diningroom) and 1/2 inside (sleeping quarters and bathroom). Just the last few days I've been praising him for pee/poop (as do the kids) but he's pretty nonchalant about the whole thing. What do we do with this? Treat it as normal (yeah you peed/pooped, good job, let's get on with life) or have a little celebration each time? I'm trying to teach him "PEE" and say that over and over when I take him to eliminate - sometimes he goes but usually he knows when he needs to go and just humors me if I'm wrong but patiently waiting until I give up. I'm not sure he drinks enough water. How often should he be peeing? He gets "out" a lot - multiple times throughout the day - at least 2-3 times with me and 2-3 times with the youngest 2 kids. He is going to bed on our schedule - around midnight - and getting up whenever we are loud enough to wake him. Yesterday, that was 5am when I got up to pee. So now he's in the boys' room and maybe he'll sleep longer. Does that sound right? He's begun nipping the youngest two girls and I figured out (I think) that he doesn't see them as dominant so I'm going to have them start doing the "flip him on his back and stare at him thing". Does that sound right? Thanks for any advice. We've named him Kilo Papageorgio. Last edited by kathy_caribe; 02-21-2009 at 05:00 AM. |

| Ack, I guess I can't edit anymore. One more question - growling. I see lots of posts about growling but I'm not sure it is a problem. He has begun growling (it is so CUTE) when we play with his toy - he'll have the toy in his mouth and I have the other end of it and kind of shake his head around (he does it on his own when he's shaking a toy also) or kind of pull him along a tiny bit (drag him - he has one end in his mouth and I have the other end). I don't drag much because I dont' want teeth to fall out and never let the kids pull up (IYKWIM). Is this ok? This is the only time he growls so far. |

| hi and welcome to YT , sounds as if you have a typical yorkie pup on your hands. Good luck with your training its just akes time with the potty training one of ours used to do the lets go out for 2 hours an come back and use the pee pad thing but with persisitance and plenty of treats for pottying outside is now 100% house trained as for the growling, they are little terriers and part of their personality.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | This sounds very typical of a yorkshire terrier. They are very hard to potty train- and they tend to nip when they are young. Ya just gotta be patient and keep teaching them. They will come around |

| Well I have some good news and some bad news .... The good news is that >>>> You have a Yorkie Puppy and the Bad News is that >>>> You Have A Yorkie Puppy The growling is typical and it can get Very vocal it's just their form of play and they love Tug of War ..... My guys would love to play all day long pulling them back and forth across the room Don't worry too much about being rough about pulling them let them be the judge on the strength you pull them Nipping ... is another thing you need to address They need boundaries ..... mouthing or nipping is a problem some times with these dogs and it can lead to aggression I'm not surprised that the youngest ones in your family are getting the brunt of it you need to tell them not to allow nipping ... children will be the ones who like to play rough with the puppy and this leads to the puppy nipping more when the puppy nips ... it's UH! and he goes into solitary that needs to be law you never want to allow that behavior esp with children in the house
