| walking toby is 3 years old. When I walk him, he will JUST stop and lay down on the sidewalk, he will not walk. Anyone else have this problem? Also how far can you take a Yorkie on a walk? |

| Does he do this right away or after you have walked for awhile? When Piccolo does this it is usually after we have walked a long time. I imagine she is telling me that she is too tired to go any more.

| Kingston will walk forever but Lily will walk about a half a mile then she is done and she just will sit down and wait for me to pick her up. She is not even 2 yet.

| Peanut will do that as well...only when we take long walks. When I take him for 3-4 miles which I usually do, and he has to stop at everything to smell it will usually take us about an hour 1/2...he will start to lay down and look and look at me like "mom I am done" but I say come on and he keeps it going then we come home and he takes about a 2 hour nap

Thor's Human Donating Member | I think there are several approaches to this: 1) Simply keep walking until your dog decides he'd rather be walked than dragged. I've done this with Thor and sometimes he just needs extra incentive to get going. He also tends to stop as a way of communicating his desired direction, ie "why didn't we turn left to go towards the PARK?" 2) Try walking your dog in a different direction. Thor was really fighting his evening walk, like stopping on every single corner and trying to turn around. Then I started walking towards, duh, the park. He's perfectly happy to do that even if we don't make it all the way there. He likes knowing he's walking towards a park, towards home, or in a new, unexplored territory. 3) I saw this one on "Dog Whisperer". If you have a car, drive about 1/4 mile away from your house and see if your dog will walk home. If he will, you can gradually build him up until he realizes that he likes to walk. ______________________________ ETA: I've walked Thor for two hours with his little legs a blur the entire way - and he still had energy when we got home! They are tough doggies.

| The only time Nikko ever plants his feet and refuses to walk is if the ground is wet or we're on a surface that he isn't used to and needs some time to get comfortable with. Other than that though, he's slowly and with much practice starting to get really good at walking on-leash with me! I just make sure to square my shoulders and start walking like I'm the boss of the world, and he should WANT to follow me, and generally he does (unless there's something really exciting going on, like someone outside watering their bushes, lol). He's close to 6mo old, 5lbs, and the longest walk we've ever been on was a little over an hour at a very brisk pace. *I* was worn out, but he acted like he could've kept going for another hour. But he's one of those stubborn little furkids who will never admit to getting tired... When he starts to get sleepy when we're hanging out indoors, he'll start being bad and chewing on stuff he's not supposed to instead of just laying down somewhere comfy! These little guys have truly amazing stubborn streaks that come along with those vibrant personalities we love so much. Lauren & Nikko |

| Hi! We got our 7 month old Yorkie not too long ago.. she didn't like to walk on a leash at first, either... but when you walk excitedly in front of her she very happily follows you. Try jogging in place to get her interested... |

| Tink used to do this when she was a puppy - it's her way of telling me she doesn't like it where she's going or she needs a break. She never lied down though - always sat rigid and refused to budge!!! xXx

| Gracie walks 1.25 miles almost every day. She would stop and refuse to go on at times last summer when she was still a puppy. It was also hot! I carried her home many a day. Now she's used to it. Sometimes she take's her time....stopping to potty a lot to get Daddy to give her a treat....or to sniff the street....or pursue a person, etc. Other than that, only very wet or cold conditions cause her to try to turn around and head home. |

This is a leader issue and the way to stop him from doing this is you not him take him out and walk ... don't be talking to him don't let him decide where to stop If he hesitates ... keep going If he then plants his feet you need to change his focus a brisk Come On! and a light tug if that doesnt work entice him with a treat and if all else fails pick him up and go a few paces and start over

| He will sometimes just stop before I even have a chance to get down the driveway. I just got back from taking him on a walk 20 minutes is all he would do, he laid down on the walk 3 rtimes. I even enticed him with treats. |
