| My 4-year-old YT is so bad, I need new floors. Please help. I have two YTs, one is 4-years-old (boy, Beemer) and the other is 3-years-old (girl, Alexis). Usually, Lexi is a very good girl who only takes after Beemer when she feels like being bad or on days where it is rainy or too cold to go outside. Currently, Beemer has been causing some problems for my husband and myself because he marks his territory about 10 times every day. When we leave the house, we keep our dogs in our master bedroom. That means that they have a place to keep warm on their bed or go into the bathroom and lay on the tile, go potty on a puppy pad, or use their doggie door to go outside and go potty. Now, Beemer never goes #2 in our room, just #1. He seems to mark relatively in the same spots, but there are so many of them, it is practically the whole room! He NEVER uses the puppy pad if he doesn't want to go outside. Our carpet in our bedroom is sooo bad, we want to change it out. We woud like wood, but we are afraid that he would ruin it. We like travertine, but it's such a cold-type of floor. I also don't want our choices for our house to depend on whether or not Beemer is going to pee on it. We don't even have kids yet! Am I making any sense? I hope I am not rambling. I just need to find a way to solve this problem of his of marking. Our bed also has a gap underneath it small enough for Beemer to crawl under. I have observed that he likes to mark and then run under the bed. He feels like we can't get to him...it is his safe haven. I asked my husband to close off the gap so that Beemer will have nowhere to hide. Maybe, just maybe that will stop him or at least reduce the amount that he marks. I have spoken to several trainers, even tried to get the Dog Whisperer to come out and help me, but the Dog Whisperer doesn't help in these types of situations, and other trainers didn't have too much advice to give. Our doggie door goes out to the sideyard, so it makes it difficult for me to keep Beemer on a leash, and take him outside and wait until he goes potty to praise him. I need something new and effective. Any ideas? |

| sounds like you need some belly bands!! They have saved my carpet along with many other members carpets several people make them on this board or they can be found on ebay too..... also there is a neutralizer made so dogs won't go back to the same spots to mark? have you tried that?

| Is Beemer neutered? Belly Bands will definitely help but won't fix the marking issue...they do keep the pee from hitting the "mark".

| If beemer is not fixed , that is the first thing I'd do. Then, I would place pee pads where he typically marks, or use belly bands too. I know consistency and patience is the ksy to training . Good luck.

| So far I have tried... If belly bands are what I think they are, I have tried them. After Beemer got used to it, he actually peed on himself when he tried to mark with it on. Does anyone know if that means that it is working or not? He is neutered, but ever since we moved into this house, he has done more marking than he has ever done in his life! Any more ideas? Your advice is greatly appreciated! |

| We have a couple of doggie boot camps here, "board and train" they call them. You drop your dog off and several weeks later you bring home a trained dog. You might want to look into it and see if they can help with the potty issue. Otherwise, could you gate them off in a large bathroom or laundry room that has linoleum floors? I'm in a similar boat. Holly will use her pee pads but when she gets excited, she forgets entirely. Between the dogs and the cats, my carpets are a mess. I have thought of laminate flooring, but need to save some big $$s for that.

| So, the belly bands are used throughout the day, and I just remove it when I tell him to go outside and go to the bathroom. Is that how it works? My house was a brand new house before we moved in here, so Beemer shouldn't be marking because of that. The only thing is that we live in a desert area and there are a lot of wild animals like coyotes, bobcats, etc. Could it be because of that? I might look into that training, but I'm sure it is expensive. He is too old to be doing this in my opinion and too young to have incontinence. |

Yes, you would keep him in a belly band unless you are outside. | |

| Well, I have a belly band, but I have to wash it if Beemer pees on it. I will try that again. Is using that belly band enough and taking it off and telling him to go outside enough for him to learn that it is bad to mark, or do I need to do something in addition to that. So far today, I have kept him on the leash, and he seems to be behaving. I think it will help to cover the gap under our bed. :-) |

| Most people put a little panty liner in the belly band and change that. Keeping a belly band on him will not teach him not to mark. It's really only a band aid for the problem. (No pun intended!) By keeping him leashed to you and dealing with it as a training regression, you may be able to get him back on track. |

| Gracie is right ... he's going to have to be sectioned off away from his marking areas and trained on the pee pads get you new carpet or wood floors and make sure everything is all cleaned of any odors

| Thank you all so much for your advice. I have used Nature's Miracle in the past, but Beemer still seems to mark even where I have sprayed heavily. Is there anything that I could use to clean off walls, doors, etc? |

| Oh yeah, it's alot of work, but no choices here! I agree. You have to fence her off in a small area. Make sure she is comfortable, and has what she needs. That doesn't mean leave water there all the time, at least not for now. Since she is middle aged now, she doesn't have to have water there all the time as long as someone is home to give her water several times a day. As soon as she eats or drinks anything, take her outside and give her your cue word to pee. "Go potty now", or just "potty". Repeat the word often enough for her to associate it when she pees or poos. Whenever she does, bring out the bands and make a huge deal about it to make the association with the behavior as strong as you can. Give her an immediate treat. I always carry a small bag of cheerios with me, they're just the right size! This can take weeks, even months, but it will work. Everyone needs to say the same thing to her, use the same words. When you or another responsible person is home, attach her to you via her lead and your belt. She should go where you go, at least during the time you are training her. Take her outside every hour to do her "go potty" routine. More if she were a pup. If she starts to do what you want her to do, you can let her go loose, but she has to stay with you. As soon as she pees or poos in the house again, immediately take her to the back yard where you take her to pee and say "potty". Of course she won't have to go, since she just did, but it's the association you are trying to create. After several minutes, place her back in her pen. Say nothing. Try not to be angry in words or in your movements. Be patient. Praise your pup as often as you can and praise yourself at the same time, because this is difficult work! Remember, when we first bought our yorkies, we all read that paragraph that talks about how difficult it often is to housetrain a yorkshire terrier. Soo, just by writing here and asking for support, you've shown how much you care about your dog. Six years is a lot of untraining to do. I'd be more worried about a younger second dog following in the same footsteps. Nature's Miracle is the best stuff I too have found. But you have to make sure you get it all. Invest in a small black light flashlight. When you shine this, you can see where there is still pee to be cleaned. I bought mine for $2.00 at a bargain table at a local hardware store. I've seen them at target. These things help, but constant training is the only way. Good Luck kiddo. |

| Thanks for the advice and motivation. I am going to do my best to keep on this. My husband and I are hoping to have kids around the house soon, and so I want to get this taken care of now. :-) |
