| I need major advice and help. I have a almost 1 year yorkie now his name is Diesel and he is still not potty trained. It has gotten to the point that Diesel now lives with my mom because my boyfriend i live with couldn't stand that he wasnt potty trained. I really want him living with me again and will do about anything to get him potty trained. We live in an apt. so i was trying to pad train him. I talked to multiple vets, breeders, groomers, etc. and they all tell me different things such as, Put his nose in it (which i refuse), other have told me it will come that it just takes yorkies a really long time, and i have gotten that if i don't potty train him in the next couple of months im stuck like this and doomed. When he lived in the apt. and now with my mom he will sometimes go on the pad and sometimes not, pretty much whatever is convenient for him. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. |

| Is he neutered? Belly Bands may help... Hopefully you find a solution that works for both you and Diesel.

| Keep him as corraled as you can with the pads available to him whenever you see him go on the pad treat him and praise him lavishly Keep an eye out when he sets to go to the bathroom and it's easier to catch him preparing to poop than pee shuttle him off to his pads It's a repetitive process .... he'll get it eventually

| The key is consistency and 100% supervision. If you can't watch him, he needs to go in his crate. As soon as he comes out, put him on the pad and do not let him leave the pad until he goes. If he really won't go, then put him back in his crate for another 10-15 minutes and repeat until he goes. If you catch him going somewhere where he isn't supposed to tell him "NO" firmly, pick him up, put him on the pad and tell him, "this is where you POTTY" ephasizing the word "potty" because you want him to learn that word. When he goes where he is supposed to, whether it's forced or not, you must give him treats and LOTS of praise. It will work!

| All very good advice here!! Here's my two cents - potty training and living a normal life don't go together!! But, if you can spare a few weeks and give the puppy your undivided attention (using the advice in this thread) you will see results. The most common mistake is that owners do other things while the puppy is loose in the house. Block off a room and watch, watch, watch the puppy. If you have to turn away to do something else (i.e. watch tv, wash dishes, brush your teeth, go potty yourself ) then put the dog in a crate. During potty training - the dog is only allowed freedom when it can be watched. Yes, it is frustrating and time consuming - but a few weeks of dedication will result in a life time of trust. Believe me this works, Bailey was trained at 4 mos and reliable at 6 mos of age. Heck, she even rings a service bell when she needs to go potty - its hilarious!!! For more ideas - get "housetraing for dummies". I used the ideas in that book and adapted my own process. Good luck!
