| Monitoring Yorkies water intake We have a 12 week old named Lilly. I read in a previous post that some people on here believe you should let a yound puppy drink as much water as they want. I quit doing that because I was trying to train Lilly, and she was peeing all the time. I know feed her water in the morning at 8 or 9, then feed her again at 5. I put both her food and water out for an hour, then take it away when the hour is up. I could understand leaving water out in the summer, but in the winter? I don't see any sense in this. It has helped me potty train her much better, and I mean much better, and she never walks around panting. Any Feedback????? |

| So, she's only getting water twice a day? Is she eating kibble or wet food? I know the wet food has a lot of water in it but if she's just eating kibble I would worry that she's not getting enough water

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Panting isn't necessarily an indication of thirst....it's their body's way of controlling temperature. You sweat when you are hot...they pant. The success in potty training could be nothing more than she's getting older....and better able to "hold" it. Fluids are necessary for all bodily functions. All animals can survive for weeks without food...without water it's just a few days. Unless it was medically necessary I would never restrict water for my animals.

| They can get dehydrated. The only time I would pull water up would be around 9:00 pm, I have 4 dogs in the house and they drink water all day, but, at night, they really hardly ever drink any. I would leave the water down all day, at 12 weeks the pup will probably pee 10-15 min after drinking. I sure wouldn't be only giving the puppy water 2 times a day |

| It isn't healthy for her to only have access to water twice a day. It would be the same for humans. If you were thirsty for hours and couldn't get something to drink, you'd be uncomfortable and begin to dehydrate. It may be a fair compromise to put it out every hour and then take her out as soon as you think it has gone through but it really should be left out all the time. If she doesn't drink enough to process what she has eaten, etc., there could be issues later. Are you only feeding her twice a day?

| Another thing is sometimes it seems like they're drinking a lot, but you put your mouth in a water bowl, try lapping it up with your tongue, they can drink 2 min and actually hardly have drank any water |

| Yeah, I agree with everyone else. My dogs always have access to fresh water and they are both fully potty trained now.

| At 12 weeks old, she is going to pee alot It really isn't a good idea to drastically limit their water intake. They usually self regulate, if there aren't any medical issues. A general rule of thumb for a normal healthy dog, is approx one ounce of water per lb of body weight. This is a general rule of thumb and may vary depending on weather, activity levels etc. Have you talked to your vet? gotten his/her opinion??
