| Help, our new Yorkie is peeing everywhere! Hi! We have just adopted a 5 yr. old yorkie girl and she is truly wonderful, the only problem is she keeps peeing on the carpet. We were told that she is piddle pad trained but have yet to see her actually use it. It's only her second day here so maybe she is just getting used to the environment and is confused and anxious. What can we do to help her learn to use the potty in the right place? Should we try to crate training her? or keep her on the pad? I don't think she has ever used a crate for pottying though. We already started a schedule where she eats at 9am and 5pm and we try to get her to use the pad shortly after that but so far it isn't working. Everytime she pees somewhere she runs and hides under the couch before I even have a chance to say something- so I can tell that she knows she did something wrong but I have no idea how to get her to understand she needs to use the pad. If it's confusing for me it must really be confusing for her. We keep her food bowls in the laundry room and a few feet away is her pad. We can close the door and I thought of closing her in there after a meal, but someone mentioned giving her a treat & praise as soon as she uses the pad. I don't think that will work if we have the door closed. Any help/advice would be much appreciated. |

| For now... unless she is with you and because she's new it's best to keep her with you in only one or two rooms keep a pee pad within sight at all times and keep her penned at night she might be house trained if she's that old too and might need to be retrained to go on the pads

| Do you want her to specifically be trained to the piddle pads? Is outside an option? My Olivia's previous owner's said she was pad trained...but I have been 100% unsuccessful with getting her to use a pad! Not once has she used a pad since she's been here. However, she will go outside so I started out taking her outside as soon as she gets out of her crate in the morning, again about an hour later (right before she goes back into her crate and I leave for work); then I take her out as soon as I get home from work. Then for the evening I take her out every 1.5 hours or so - I look at it as opportunity to succeed (with plenty of chances to go). She sometimes only goes a tiny little spot when I take her out - but she definitely knows what I am wanting her to do and she tries! The routine seems important with her.

| I'm having the same problem, but... Quote:
Then someone pointed out to me (can't remember if it was a fellow YT parent) that my home IS the outside for him at least until he realizes that this is his home now. It's been almost 2 wks. and it's getting better. He has accidents and because of the weather I don't freak out, it breaks my heart to see him walking on the freezing cold, blue stoned yard and pick his tiny paws up to lick them in order to get them warm Your baby sounds as if she has been punished severely for doing it wrong and she needs to trust that you won't. Get some Natures Miracle or mix vinegar with water for your carpet and give your new baby some time to adjust It can only get better.

I tried to take her outside today and she nearly froze to death. About 1/4 of a block from our house she just laid on the ground and would not walk anymore. Her feet were shaking- it was just too cold outside and we just had a huge snow fall too so it was especially cold out. I belive the windsheild made it feel like -30. Her last owner said she did not ever go outside but it seems that she really likes it. I need to get her some boots and a coat though. She was only in a sool sweater and it just was not enough, plus she is not used to being outside much at all. I wonder if she will keep the boots on though? I hope so becuase we would like to get her into the routine of walking everyday. It's good for both of us

I noticed that they can't keep their paws in one spot inside the booties, they move around and this may be why they don't want to walk in them (the socks get wet easily). I've tried the x-small, small and mediums, but none have pleased them or me. If you find booties that fit snugly and aren't dangerous for them to wear, please share where to get them. It hurts to see my little ones walk in the snow, especially the boy, he's more fragile than my girl .

| When she pees on the carpet then runs and hides, she really "doesn't" know she did anything wrong. She's been yelled at and possible hit when she did and is why she is so scared. You shouldn't let her have run of the house right now. Go back to square one and start potty training her. If you have an expen that would work best. Attach the expen to the front of the crate and put the pad at the other end. (cover the crate to keep it warmer and den-like). Take her out every hour for a little potty and exercise time and praise like crazy when she goes. If she pees on the floor instead of her pad, put a bit of the pee on the pad. It's going to take awhile to train her because you have to build her trust first. Whatever you do, don't scold her. This method really does work, but just be patient with her. It may take her longer than it would a puppy because of what she has obviously gone thru. In no time you will see her blossom.

| I bought a 5 1/2 month old biewer girl on November 20th. The lady I bought her from had a few different pups running around and had pee pads down, but, of course, she wasn't right with them all the time. When I got mine, she peed on my carpet a few times, now, I've had her 1 mo. and she's 100% housebroken! The way I do it was I would let her pee on my carpet(heck, it's already ruined anyway), but, the pads are down in 2 places. As soon as I saw her peeing, I would put her nose down by it and tell her NO you pee on the paper, and then took her to the pad. she is very smart and learned very quickly. I have the 2 down, and one down in the pen I was keeping her in. She actually does go in the pen occasionally and uses that one too |
