| inconsistent potty training issues ;-( Tia will wee on the pad the majority of the time but doesnt mind weeing on the floor either its like whenever she feels like weeing she will do it wherever she is. But she will never ever poo on the wee pad but only on the floor. How do I get her to realise that she NEEDS to wee and poo on the wee pad. I'm sooo stuck, I dont know what to do and she'll be one next month and we been having these issues since she was a pup. Any help would be appreciated.

| Kisskiss, I have a 3 month old yorkie that I am trying to train to go outside, but we also use the pee pad. I have the pee pad sitting right next to the back door. That way if I don't get her out quick enough she will pee and poop on it. I will say though, that though most of the time she goes on the pee pad, she still will for some unknown reason decide to pee elsewhere in the house. I don't know why she does it. I know she knows what the pee pad is for, but once in awhile she still will find a place on the carpet. I am baffled as to why. I just have to keep a real sharp eye on her. If I catch her going on the carpet, I say a firm "no" and pick her up and set her on the pee pad. I do wish you luck - I wish I had an exact answer for you but I too am going through this. Hang in there!!

| Missing the pads Our Monte is doing the same thing you describe; we are training only to the pads, because of our Wisconsin weather . . . (our FIFTH snowstorm already this year is happening right now!) Monte is five months old and sometimes gets close to the pad, but then stands there and pees, missing by a foot. We're starting to think that if we don't have the cleanest pads / newspapers there, he won't go on them. (If he peed earlier and we didn't pick up the entire newspaper, then he won't go near it.) That's part of our problem. When he poops, it's sticking to his butt sometimes and then he runs away, leaving it fall wherever it may. At first we thought he was pooping wildly, but now we realize we have to cut his hair shorter on his hinder, or SOMETHING. He's not really missing the paper, the poop is just traveling with him. Sometimes I think Monte has to train us, more than us having to train him. Also, with his small bladder, we just have to remember to get him in there more often and praise him like crazy when he gets it right. The "Yorkies for Dummes" book says they may not be fully trained until a year, and that's if we're consistent about it! |

| To those of you with the problem of poop sticking to the dogs butt, I too went through that with my tiny yorkie puppy. One of my best friends is a groomer, and every single dog she grooms gets the hair around his "bottom hole" shaved. I have her shave by dogs butts regularly - it eliminates all poop sticking!! Good luck!!

| Potty training woes Hi, my Charlie was having issues with potty training regression (but he's only 11 weeks old so I understand that he's still a puppy and will have to keep working on it). Charlie is spot on with his weeing, but when it comes time to poo, he would miss. Here's what I tried: - It's hard to catch a poo in the act. So as soon as you see it, correct the behavior. I take him to the bad poo (without saying a word), put his nose close to it (not in it), tap his bottom (tap, not hit), and then pick it up with toilet paper and put it on his potty (all without saying a word). Once he's on the potty with the poo, I praise him, even though he didn't go on it on his own. I also left a little poo remnant (like a smudge or a tiny little drop) so he could find it easily. - I REALLY cleaned up the areas where I noticed his poo. Don't let the scent linger. Scrub it out! - I switched him from hard kibble to soft canned puppy food/the real people food diet. He does MUCH sooner after he eats with the soft food and it comes out MUCH easier for him. I noticed, when I'd catch him in the act, that he would start to poo on his potty and then step off before he was done, or some would get stuck in his bottom and he's scoot on the floor to get it off of him. The soft food made it easier for him to go all at once and I could time it better. Hope this helps!!! Oh, and if you do catch him pooing in the potty, say "potty, go potty, go potty" while he's doing it, and then give him ridiculous praise afterward. As far weeing goes. I switched Charlie from the wee wee pads to the indoor, reusable, synthetic grass potty. I didn't like the idea of wasting all of that paper, because I plan to keep him trained to potty inside. The grass mat gives him a very distinct texture to potty on. I read that puppies (and maybe adult dogs that never really fully got potty trained) can mistake similar textures/fabrics for their wee wee pads (e.g., carpet, towels, bed spreads, etc.). Good luck! |
