| Night Barking/Whining in the Car You all have helped me so much in the pasts thank you! I have a one year old dog who is completely potty trained and does tricks on commands. No problems in that area. Two problems we are having: At night my dog barks at random noises outside and wakes up the house. I dont want to lock her in her crate room at night. I want her to continue to sleep next the bed at night in her doggie bed. She does not do this at all during the day. She only barks when the doorbell rings and then she is happy to greet whoever comes in. I dont want to confuse her becaue i want her to bark if someone comes in the house at night (which she does). Any suggestions, considering Im half sleep and the Corrections are not seeming to work. 2nd issue Pixie whines loudly in the car, i take her to a lot of places with me so she gets car rides a lot. I wonder if she thinks im taking her to the kennel. I dont think its carsick. Thanks so much (i tried to search the threads but keeping error message) |

| It's pretty tuff ... trying to get a Yorkie to stop doing what they have been bred to do and that's ..... being an alarm dog They do have Bog Mouths for such little guys But it soounds like your dog might be a bit insecure and that's why you barking at night when you're not there to protect her and the crying in the car which she likely assoc with some bad experiences with the car play the in and out game where you intice her into the car with some treats and get her to assoc good things with the car then take her to a park or somewhere she will enjoy and keep praising her for not crying one thing is don't scold her when she does cry you making noise.... when she crys only inforces her bad behavior

| My Duke barks at night too!!! at any noises he hears. We live in an apartment building where we can hear our neighbors coming and going so it's really tough. I've gated him in my bedroom with me at night so that he doesn't run to the door but he would still barks from the bedroom, I've tried distracting him by squeking one of his toys. Have not found anything else yet so hopefully someone can suggest a better method, but you're not alone...

| Try this for the whining, get in the car with treats and a magazine. Let the dog sit in the normal place and kick back and read the articles. When the dog stops whining, give treats and when the dog whines, ignore. If you do this a few times for a few minutes each time, it should work. Gradually add rides in and keep the treats up when Pixie is quiet. Even if it's a half second of quiet, say "good girl". It takes patience but it will work if you do. Good luck.

| night barking and whining Quote:
I have a dog car seat in front and if she starts to whine, I immediately correct with a little Dog Whisperer suggestion by using my two fingers and do a very lite tap on the side of her neck and make a sound of " SHH, Shh." or....that will do, no whining. IN a different tone of voice, I lower it. It works. Sophie sleeps with me and only uses her dog bed at the office at work. When I get ready for bed, I just say, let's go, it time for night night and she goes in my room , gets on chair to help get into bed and waits for my permission to get on bed or under covers. Usually she is very tired because we walk at least a mile and one half a day. If she hears an animal and barks I again acknowledge it calmly until she stops. I don't know why this works, I must have read it in one of my thousand Yorkie books. Good luck. Or....how about moving her dog bed out of the room? | |

| Good suggestions about braking control! We've also broken the whining in the car (very early on) - my husband sings to Lucy. He makes up songs as he goes along and sings them in kind of a howly baby voice - Lucy loves it, and we've never heard a peep from her since. All I need to do now is decide which sound I liked least - Lucy whining or dady singing!
