Question Starting full-blast crate training tomorrow!

And I have a few questions.
Im not sure if you can tell how big this crate is or not, but maybe you can give an idea:

http://ladies-connect.com/v-web/gall...1/tst_0045.jpg

Anyways.. here are my questions:

Am I suppose to leave the food and water in there for her all day/times?
--or just feed her when I want her to eat at first? (shes been having it down all day since we've been letting her roam free)

What all am I suppose to have in there?
--shoudl I have a big comfy blanket, just a towel, puppy pee pad or what?

I am starting this in the AM, after of course we wake up and take her out to potty. I am to keep her in the crate at all times until I know its time for her to potty right? and then of course if she does it, I praise her outside and have her out through the house for how long afterwards? then back in the crate -- What if she doesnt go potty at all, I just put her back in and try again in about an hour or so and keep repeating til she goes?

Toys
--Shes still not into the whole playing with toys yet, so shoudl I still leave some in there?

Feeling *punished*
--Is there any way she will feel sorta punished while she is in there but sees Daphne roaming free and so forth? I feel bad for doign this, but we so want her trained and we've heard good outcomes on those that do crate training... Is it silly to think she will feel punished or not as good if she sees Daphne out and so forth?

And last but not least...
--I am allowed to talk to her in the crate right? (its in my living room) I think I was told it would be okay to talk to her and soothe her, telling her its okay and so forth but NO rubbing/touching unless she is out and being praised for pottying outside, right?

-----------
I think thats it.. lol If yall have anything else to add or tell me, feel free.

Trixie has the same size crate/kennel. She stays in it while I am at work (I do go home at lunch time to take her out). I have her food and water bowl in there (I have food available all day even when I am home... and I leave it in the kennel so she doesn't think the kennel is a punishment). I started out with putting a puppy pad and an old towel in there. But she didn't go on it and seemed to think the puppy pad was a fun toy and ripped it apart every time... so now I put a piece of carpet underneath and still have the towel in there for her to lay on. I do give her toys to play with. And I recently got a small kong and stuff it with treats, so she keeps herself busy with trying to get it out while I am gone. She loves the kong, when I prepare it for her, she goes straight to her kennel and sits there waiting.

I don't use the kennel when I am home; my husband does use the kennel when he can't watch her every second (AKA play his playstation ). He says he just doesn't pay attention to her when she cries.

I haven't purposely used the kennel for potty training... During potty training I kept an eye on her ALL the time. When I saw her squat down I clapped my hands together to startle her and interrupt her, I said 'no' and ran outside with her. She hasn't had an accident in 3 weeks... WHOOOOHOOOO!!!!

Ok, let me ask you this. I have been training my Chanel to go outside for 5 days now without crate. I have been able to do this by giving her food and water in the mornings before i leave for work and when i get home from work.

I walk her in the morning before anything. If she has to pee she does and poo also if she has to. Then i give her food and water and walk her again. of course, give her treats and praise her when she does it outside. But i leave her loose in whole house. lately i havent found but 1 pee on teh floor. ALOT less than before when i use to leave her food and water all day. She would leave about 5-7 pee spots at times.

Might not be good right? Not leaving water for her for about 6 hours? I mean dont get me wrong. I dont mistreat her. I play with her so much and is SUPER SPOILED!!! And even when i do give her water, she drinks a bit not alot.

Crate training is to leave food and water in there to get them to eat and drink while learning how to HOLD it correct? So its good to leave the amount of food she will eat and water. And hopefully she will catch on, on holding it and doing it when we take her outside?

I don't think you should confine her to the crate all the time just when you can't watch her like a hawk. She has to learn that potties okay just not in the house and where to go when she needs to let you know that it's that time. Always take her out the same door to potty. When she starts to get the hang of it she will go to that door if she needs to go out. Ours will now walk to the door if he needs to go out and if it's not open he goes and looks for another place, but since we watch him like a hawk we get the door open before this happens. Also if you see her start to go clap your hands pick her up (try not to get pottied on) and put her outside. And go crazy when she finishes outside. Ours only goes in the crate at night and he hangs out in his play-pen during the day when we're gone. Oh yeah and confine her to one room of the house so you don't have to run all over trying to keep an I on her. I would feed at certain times rather than free feeding so you can develop a potty pattern and you will soon learn to recognize the potty dance.

So how is the crate training going? I started today after work. Gave her treats to make her feel comfy.. left her in there for about 7 minutes while i am sittin next to her. Then took her out, took her out, she peed. then came inside got her free time playing and all with me on my bed. Then i put treat in crate and she went in. i layed on bed while she in her crate on floor. after about 4 minutes she started to softly cry and then started to try to dig her way out. I waited for her to get quiet and then took her out.. What do you guys think? I have been trying to do what all the books and tips say... Specially since i just started training school. But she doesnt seem to respond that great with the clicker. I am starting to think over this whole outside training. I thought it would be best since the house would smell fresh not like pee, less $$$ for pads and all. But i will see how it goes in the next few weeks. I wanted to practice more with the clicker but she doesnt respond to it. she just *like the flash turn and look and look away*...

Well today is day 4 and NO accidents! I'm so proud of her!
She has been going outside, so no accidents in the house or crate. Ive upped her free time out now for 1-2 1/2 hours depending on the time of day and so forth and she's really catching on I think. We are gonna do this for at least a month though to make sure -- but its workign great for us!

Very good. I remember having to take two weeks off work to accomplish this once.
I think the main reason the crate is good, it is a small confined area and they do
not like to pee where they can't get away from it. Another little hint that I bet
you are doing already - always pick her up out of the crate and bring her to the
same spot outside and say go pee pee. They like that same spot and the more
they hear pee pee it will click in their little mind. If you don't pick them up out of their crate, they will probably pee or leak some before you get out to the spot. You are doing so well on your "full blast"

Congratulations.. Well i cant really go on a FULL BLAST like you becuae i work. And i guess, untill she starts getting used to it more and more, i wont be able to leave her in there for about 8 hours. TOO LONG in my opinion. But some may say otherwise.. Although keep in mind that at night, she sleeps all night on our bed. Meaning she is very well capable of holding it for more than 8 hours. Even when i leave for work, i leave her crate open with toys inside. The crate is in my room, and when i come home from work , no pee or poop. Again meaning she could hold it for 8 or more hours. This is of course having her on a schedule when it comes to eatin. I know for a fact that if i leave water and food all day long i will surely find pee all over the place. so i think my room has kind of been a huge crate for her.

What do you guys think? If she can hold it for 8 hours already, i should still practive crate training right?>

Right now i know that if i let her walk loose around the house, she might do a tiny puddle.. u know. Tahts why i always have her in my room were she NEVER does.. dont know why...

You are doing great but you must leave water out ALL the time - these
tiny dogs dehydrate too quickly.

ok. So le me ask you something. If i leave water out, i think that she will eventually pee within the 8 hours i am at work. And since she is not inside her crate, i think she will get the habbit of peeein in the room. no? Waht do you think? remember i dont leave her in her crate all day, i just started, and would hate coming to work for 8 hours, knowing that in a matter of 5 minutes she cried.. But maybe becuase i was there next to her, and she knew i could take her out.

Maybe i should try to put her in crate today and go into another room and listen to make sure.. besides i know for a fact i would hear her bark...

Oh no, you couldn't leave her in her crate all day; you will have to have someone
come in and take her out mid-way through the day if you are too far away to
come home for lunch

yeah, because i am far from home and cant really go and come back in time. I mean. I sometimes think even taht i got the crate for no reason, becuase like i said before. I leave her in my room and doesnt pee or poo in there. In my case of being at work all the time, I think i should do inside training. But I wanted to teach her to go outside. That also the house smells fresh for all of us..

So what do you guys think? I got the crate. she is in my room all day not in crate, when i go home at nights, is there any ppoint in crate training if when i go home i take her directly outside and she pees and poos outside? she still has accidents in the house if i were to leave her wondering all over unsupervised. So after i walk her outside i come back in with her and again back in my room. But i guess also its good to her use to her crate so that she learns to sleep in it and feel safe when she is home alone. I guess after this whole training. She will know that always do her thing outside. And in the long run i could just leave her in the whole house. wow.. how complicated.

Hi, I am also working on crate training. Now like today.....I took her outside for over five minutes. She just looked around, sniffed, and layed on her puppy pad..(we have a huge back porch, so I have her puppy pad out there so she can still go out when it is raining and such)...but the MINUTE I came in and took her leash out and put her in her crate, she peed! I thought they didn't like to go in their bed??? She is 14wks old and doesn't mind walking all in her own mess.....Any suggestions? Today I have kept her on the leash even inside so I can watch her...if I just put her in her room and let her roam, she will pee everywhere....Does this sound o.k.???

What is a Kong? I try to stuff goodies in those bones, but it doesn't work well.
